It is evident that she has some mixture, so if she didn't mentioned the other races, then that would not be that much of a slam. Re: Mariah's sirname Someone posted an article on her exploring the "Venezuelan" background, in which she could not find no link on her visit. Perhaps, it was on this board. Anyway, I think Daddy Carey was just a garden variety black man, who lived in New York. When MC was on the cover of Vibe magazine a few years ago, she said something about her grandfather was Venezuelan and her grandmother was a Southern black woman. Her grandfather's original last name was Nunez, and at that time if someone had a 'foreign' surname, it was changed. He chose Carey.

I still don't see where Mariah tried to hide or deny anything . She has discussed in detail her family history since the beginning of her career. I'm not disputing that Radio Scope quote, just the idea that Mariah has for years denied that her father was black until recently (your original point). There's plenty of evidence that shows the opposite.
Mariah was on a protional tour for her Rainbow album in 1999, and while in Venezuela, she asked the public's help in finding her grandfather's family. There were a couple of claims from some individuals, but the most credible one came from a television program that had her grandfather's niece and some cousins. She said he dropped all contact with the family when he came to the US. Mariah commented once on that discovery, but that's about it.

I don't follow Mariah's life in detail. All I know is what she said on Radio Scope, after that I didn't pretty much care what she had to say in the media about her history. I'm not disputing that she had earlier articles that stated she was black. Unfortunately, the interview that I heard was what left an impression on me, so much that I didn't care what she had to say back then.

Nothing is wrong with saying that, though it was her grandfather who was Venezuelan though. It just seems that whenever a celebrity says they're part black, it's like a door slams shut, some people have violent reactions, like "I can't like you if you're part black." I remember some people were even turned off when they found out Jessica Alba was half Mexican. I think that's the reason people like Vin Diesel don't say anything; their managers tell them that "once you say you're black...it limits you."
However Jennifer Beals always said that her father was black, which shocked some people in 1983.

Really? Because I'm more turned off by Jessica Alba's current "stop telling me how exotic I am! I hate it! Oh, and I landed my boyfriend because I'm blonde now" act.
Mariah annoys me more because she seems to pull out the race card when it's convenient like, for example, saying in Q Magazine re: her breakdown and subsequent therapy: "People tend to think it [i.e. going into therapy] was about being a biracial family and that certainly was an issue." No, the crazy was the issue. Or when she says lines like "them chickens are ash and I'm lotion" and works with top rap producers or whatever to get a hit song since she was fading.
I know that racism is still a genuine problem and I don't intend to dismiss it, but I think celebs themselves aren't always dealing with race issues in the best of ways.

I dont think Mariah hides it. I remember when she first came out - back when her first or second album hit. My then boyfriend used to call me her twin because we had a lot in common (we are the same heigth, close in age, and have a black dad/white mom). I was only a casual fan and I have always known that. I always took it as her saying he is from Venzeula because that is just an interesting tidbit - but then I thought it was common knowledge she was half black.
I hate to think that just because I tend to leave out that I am part native american that people will think I am not proud of it. I am very proud of my black, white (irish) and native american background. I just get tired of explaining it all. I also get tired of being asked which race I "feel".

I think Ronnie Spector is black. She's from "Spanish" Harlem. The beehives and exaggerated eye makeup of the '60s made everyone, black and white, appear alien but she looks black in recent pictures.
