A friend of mine mentioned that yesterday. He was pretty pissed though that she said it was a 'choice' rather than saying she was a bi-sexual (she's been married to a man before.)

Sheryl does really seem bisexual. She clearly loved her husband and now she is in love with a woman. I really wish people weren't so quick to throw out the gay label, there are actually quite a few bi-sexual people in the world. Especially with men, if a man has sex with other men he is automatically labeled as gay, even if he has sex with women too. There is a word for that, it is called bi-sexuality.

George Takei isn't news to most long time Star Trek fans, I think. Good for him to finally come out and say it, though. It's nice that being gay has become this not-so-big deal, enough that an old man can finally be honest about his life.
I wish Tom Cruise would suck it up and out himself too.

I wish Tom Cruise would suck it up and out himself too. I was thinking the exact same thing! He would still have his long following fan base. I don't understand WHAT the "problem" would be if he DID actually admitted he was gay.

The media would have a field day. He would be hounded. Every man ever seen with him would be followed, interviewed, harrassed, as would his former wives. It would be a celebrity firestorm, the likes of which we've never seen before. And much of America would shun him for it.

I don't think this is true. I have a family member who would absolutely stop watching movies of Hottie X if they came out. I live in the Midwest. Trust me, I'm not proud of it. But I think the box-office appeal of young stars would absolutely be affected by a public outing.
Hooray for 2 celebs coming out in such a short span of time.

Sad but true. My sister refuses to listen to Elton John because he's gay. If you ask her why she doesn't listen she say's "because he's gay", and whispers the word "gay" as if it's a swear word and that someone from her church may hear her and think she's condoning it.
PS. I love my sister, she's a truly wonderful person. She just grabbed hold of the religion we were raised in and ran with it. Sometimes she looks at me and smiles and shakes her head. I AM the cross she must bear. ;D

Coming from the South, I can also say that, yes, absolutely there are stupid people that would boycott a movie because star is gay (remember the Southern Baptists and their campaign against Disney because of Ellen?). But unfortunately, there's a Catch-22 of until a massive-star that everyone loves (so maybe *new* Tom isn't the best choice ) comes out, a lot of people and Hollywood in general won't be forced to confront their prejudices. But because of said prejudices, the star can't come out. I've heard that Nate Berkus, Oprah's decorator, received a lot of support after he lost his lover in the Tsunami -- and this people were surprised because the support was coming from Oprah's core Midwestern audience, some of whom admitted that this/he changed their mind, etc.
