Dr. Kildare? How is he anything but red white and blue? ( I have Dr. Kildare pin up cards...for real. The things we save.) I just googled Dr. Kildare/images, and I have all those pictures! I have Beatles cards, too, like over a hundred of them.

Richard Chamberlain is American? No way! That's as million times more surprising to me than him being gay ever was. That's my exact first thought when I heard he'd come out! "He's American!?!? I mean the gay part, eh, I suspected as much....but American?" Just curious...where did you guys think he was from?

I guess England, but I could have bought any vaguely Commonwealth-type place, including Anglo Kenyan (like Richard Dawkins--is that the right term?), or antipodean and heavily drama-schooled, or even born somewhere and raised by British missionaries. I think it was a case of a role-defining persona (see also, the Texan John Hillerman as Jonathan Higgins, and on the outer limits of lacking cultural context, David Ogden Stiers as Charles Emerson Winchester) and then not really being invested enough to follow up. And I've never seen Dr Kildare. I knew he was in the series, but I thought the older fellow on the DVD box cover was the Dr, not Chamberlain. Also, "Chamberlain" sounds too fancy to be an American name.

Me too! He played an Englishman in Shogun, if memory serves, and that's how I've always thought of him.

Is so nice that instead of his sexuality people are shocked about where he was born : ) I made the British assumption as well.

I was watching a PBS show on Girl Groups of the 50s and 60s, and I wondered if Lesley Gore (It's My Party, You Don't Own Me etc.) was still with us. She is, and she is an out lesbian who hosts a GLBT show as well. She came out about 10 years ago, and had been with her partner for 23 years at that point.
