I'm convinced that the Australian TV and film industry is just a boys club, and once you're in, you're in for good, regardless of talent, appearance, or behaviour. Matthew Newton fails on all counts, but he's got the name.

I think you are right, Evil. Agreed that he is a bland actor. And fug. He was awful in Changi. I was unknowingly confronted with him as the lead of Tom Stoppard's Rock 'N' Roll at the STC a few years ago. Way to ruin a night at the theatre! I remain kind of pissed at Cate Blanchett for letting that cretin perform on her stage. This was around the time that he was cavorting around with Barry Otto's daughter - not the talented Miranda, but the (I do hate to use this word, but it is salient) famewhorish wannabe director.

I heard from a very credible source several years ago that Brooke Satchwell had called the cops on him several times previously but never went through with the process that would lead him to being charged - like over 90% of women who call in domestic violence complaints. As it was, she was finally convinced to press charges by makeup artists who were confronted with her bruised face on set. And well all know how that turned out. I only wish all the best for Rachael Taylor.

Aw, I hope Australia gets to keep it's first female Prime Minister and Labour led government. Unfortunately, if you moved here now, we have a conservative prime minister who might not be that much better than Abbott.

The talk about Matthew Newton is interesting. I only know what I've read about him in the 'Who', namely, he beat his celebrity girlfriend years ago and has some pretty big personality problems. The only reason I've been aware of him lately is that we're getting the Aussie X-factor over here (yay) and I was shocked that he was the host. I'm amazed that he's still popular enough to front such a big show. Did people not believe he assaulted his girlfriend the first time, or do you think they were just giving him a second chance? I don't know why I'm surprised that someone so awful could still be on TV. I just thought that since Brooke Satchwell was so popular they may have turned on the person who assaulted her.

I guess people like a story of someone at rock bottom redeeming themselves, but he just seems like a massive prick.

ontd_political has posted a write up of Abbot basically declaring he was an oppressed white man because people were calling him on sexist crap. He can't understand, for example, why it's sexist to suggest that all women want to have babies. Oh and he can't be sexist because his wife and daughters like him! It was just made of WTF?!

He also thinks that all women should be virgins until marriage as a "special gift" to their husbands. He doesn't hold the same standard for men though which begs the question of who men are going to give their own precious gift to? Other men? Surely not! He thinks homosexuals are an abomination!

So, New Zealand might have its own conservative govt but, from what I know about it, it's not run by a mad monk who doesn't believe in climate change, thinks the internet is totally over-rated, and who thinks that girls shouldn't be given cervical cancer vaccines because they shouldn't be having sex with anyone but their future husbands anyway.

The only thing keeping me from fleeing the country at great speed is the feeling that the independents who'll be making the decision seem to be relatively sane (on a scale of sane to Steve Fielding).
