I was reading an SMH article about the shooting incident in Colorado and the uncertain identity of the twins. Someone made a comment that said, to the effect, "Of course they were from Victoria. Where else would they be from?" Could someone who is fluent in geographical and cultural stereotypes unravel that for me?

Hmmmm, I don't know. I mean, there's always been a rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne (so much so that when we federated and they had to choose a capital they couldn't decide so they went for a new one slap bang in the middle between the two cities - hence Canberra!) but that's more over who is the cultural and economic capital. But to say someone is from Victoria is not much of a put down. Saying that someone is from Queensland or Tasmania, on the other hand, well ...
