There was some general discussion of the strike happening in the Ellen DeGeneres (SCAB!) thread, so I thought maybe one should be started here (since it affects both TV and movies).

Me too. I am worried that the picket lines will start thinning out in the next few weeks or so though.

Is there anything that people who live abroad can do to help out? Thanks.

Check out fans4writers.com. They are collecting donations to have pizzas delivered to picket lines throughout the strike.

I don't think you have to worry about that. The SAG strike in 2000 lasted for over five months, and we would have continued as long as it took. Of course, it hit a lot of the industry (in Hollywood and beyond) really hard, and granted, there are about 120,000 SAG members (all over the world; about 85,000 in the US) versus about 12,000 WGA members. But the writers have enormous and sustained support from the other performers' unions.

Zivvie, sorry if you've addressed this question elsewhere, but are you a screenwriter? Just curious!

Totally in support of the writers. I've been reading the TVWOP thread about the strike, which has been highly informative.

Zivvie, sorry if you've addressed this question elsewhere, but are you a screenwriter? Just curious! Curiosity is good! I'm an actress and a playwright, and I've been working off and on on a screenplay of one of my plays. It was supposed to be made into a short (15 minutes or so) film, but the funding fell through. I'm hoping to join the WGA in the foreseeable future, but it's A) not easy and B) not cheap. Unlike the performers' unions, I don't think there are any provisions for "grandfathering in" someone from another artist's union (I'm in SAG). So I'm working on getting into the WGA! In terms of how those outside the US can help: I'm not sure. I think if you email any of the writer-bloggers and ask them what you can do, they'd be able to give you suggestions (and be really appreciative in the process).
