For anyone who is a fan of Star Trek or is just a fan of sci-fi television, I can recommend the book The Red Shirt. It's about crew members aboard the space ship, The Intrepid, who start noticing that every time there's an away mission, some low level crew member ends up dying. Obviously, it's based on the Star Trek phenomenon of having a crew member dressed in a red shirt die whenever Kirk, et al. went on a dangerous mission. If you're looking for something original, that's a light read, with touches of humor, thus is the book for you. Although I will say that there are also some very touching moments that deal with processing loss of loved ones. Small correction: The title is Redshirts. I love John Scalzi's books, and Redshirts was actually my least favorite. I love Old Man's War.

Does anyone have recommendations for books in the style of And Then There Were None (10 Little Indians) by Agatha Christie? That is a group of people being picked off one by one in an isolated setting? I recently read Ten by Gretchen McNeil which is kind of a YA version. The book was just okay but it made me realize I really like that specific genre. More mystery then horror but still creepy. I'm looking for more books like that, preferably modern but classic recs are good too.

I just recently read a new book by Anthony Horowitz, Magpie Murders, which is a sort of modern homage to Agatha Christie. It was a quick, enjoyable read.

thanks for the suggestion! I read his Sherlock Holmes homages and enjoyed them. The House of Silk and MoriarityThe best SH homage I've read is The Whole Art of Detection: Lost Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes by Lyndsay Faye. She does an excellent job of capturing the writing style of ACD and making the characters' relationship a bit more sophisticated.

They Do it With Mirrors and Murder on the Orient Express, both by Christie. I think you'll find she wrote several others, some featuring Miss Marple and others Poirot. Also take a look at John Dickinson Carr Cover Her Face*If this doesn't make sense, and you want it to, read the last few pages of the Shailene Woodley thread.

I can read, watch TV, make my own toothpaste out of clay from my backyard and read all the Celebrity threads at the same time. I've read Woman in Cabin 10 and liked it. There should be more murder mysteries set on ships. I've put a hold on Magpie Murders. It sounds really interesting.

I find that if I'm not getting sun on my vagina while reading and eating ethically sourced obscure grains, I may as well be watching TV for all the good it does me.
I liked Magpie Murders! Am about to read Lincoln in the Bardo.

Did anyone read Into the Water, the new-ish book from the author of Girl on the Train? I tried to get into it, but couldn't get past the first couple of chapters. I'm just wondering if it gets better or if Girl on the Train was a fluke.

The page showed me All the Missing Girls, which I did read and can recommend.
