According to people who have read both, E L James did a find and replace on the names to turn Master of the Universe into "original" fiction. Which makes me think she did a *really* piss poor job on characterisation if no one can tell Christian was originally Edward and Ana was originally Bella.

No one's getting upset. Baffled, maybe, but not upset. Disappointed that so many women are finding an abusive relationship sexy in this context, but not upset. One thing to get upset about, though, is the fact that James took her Twilight fanfic, filed off the serial numbers and sold it. In many if not most fandoms, pulling a number like that is a serious breach of etiquette. Fans are lucky that most creators don't forbid us from playing in their sandbox and making derivative works as long as we don't go behind their back and sell it, claiming it as our own. James did just that and to my knowledge she has never so much as acknowledged that if it wasn't for Twilight, 50 Shades wouldn't even exist. She's certainly not the first author to do that, and she and these other authors are the reason fandom can't have nice things.

From what I heard, it was literally (bad choice of words) almost shot for shot. I'd actually like to read the original Twilight fanfiction piece to compare, I also wonder what she had to change in reference to book 3. I saw her on the View months ago and she actually said that Fifty Shades was originally Twilight fanfiction, she's always said it was Twilight fanfiction. I was talking to a friend of mine today, a woman in her 50's with two children and she didn't consider the relationship abusive, so it's kind of like "tomato/tomahto."

I don't understand why folks can't believe that people might like this book. Also, the sex scenes become boring and repetitive by the third book. Still, folks like what they like. That's what makes the world go around. I work in a library. Nine times out of ten, the people who have been anxiously waiting for their name to come up to the top on the holds list have absolutely no idea what the book is about. They heard it was popular and that was it. I don't think there are actually all that many people out there who do like the book. That being said, it's a shitty book. It's horribly written. If someone tells me they liked it, I am going to wonder why. How is this surprising? If someone was like "man I love eating raccoon turds for breakfast" I would ask "why?" And so if someone says "that Fifty Shades of Grey, what a corker!" I will say "what the fuck is wrong with you." Good Lord, this is funny. I wish we had a Post of the Day because this needs to be nominated.

I did say "to my knowledge." I don't exactly follow her publicity unless something is posted to one of the blogs I read. I guess she had no choice but to acknowledge it since everyone pretty much knew it immediately.
I don't see what being in one's fifties or having kids has to do with anything, but whatever. We're just going to have to agree to disagree.

My point was that by the time you are in your 50's it's "been there, done that, can't really say anything to shock me" stuff. (that's how I feel at least). BTW, in 50 Shades, I at first thought Christian was controlling until I realized that Ana was SO unbelievably gullible and totally unaware of what was happening around her that it was a wonder she could actually cross the street by herself without causing a major accident. And then there was, "ooohhh, email, how do I use that?" WTF?

I think you can find a story hot, or enjoy it, while at the same time knowing it's poorly written, derivative trash.

Yeah that's my problem with it basically-I feel like all these women are wasting good money when they can find hotter sex stories online for free. And ones who actually show a real, good, BSDM relationship.

How old are the women who are buying and loving this book? In my experience, it's older (40s-50s) suburban types who may not be very internet savvy and may not know where to look to find accurate BDSM stories online. Probably they're afraid to search for it because who knows what might turn up. If they want to read 50SOG, they can just order it from Amazon or buy it at a bookstore, all nice and simple. It's much more publicly acceptable. No muss, no fuss, no embarrassment.
