Never got into the Harry Potter hype, and never care to in the future. It makes me a heretic to most of my friends, but now I feel better.

First off ... this thread is so cleansing.
Hello my name is FascistPanties. I have a BA in English from Boston College. I am currently attending a Creative Writing MFA program. I make my living as a writer. And I have read EVERY book by Danielle Steele and worse...enjoyed most of them. ::sigh:: Thank you.

I'm getting an MA in Chillun's Lit -- I do work on school stories, even! -- and have only read the first Harry Potter book. I'd rather wait and see how it ages in a generation or so.

Dwan, I am so incredibly envious of you -- an MA in children's lit! Sounds like heaven! I wonder what it would be like to be working on a degree in something I'm passionate about (I'm trudging through my Ph.D. in poli sci, and I hate it). What do you plan to do careerwise when you finish school?
Sorry for the off-topic post.

Not a problem! However, don't let that nasty Brookie find out about OT Posting... she'll totally ban yo azz. Anyway, Sleepyy, I'll be doing more of what I've been doing -- writing critically and teaching -- only y'all'll hafta call me "Dr." in a few years. I thought I might insist on being called "Master" after I got my first MA (in general English Lit) a few years back, but people scorned me openly. Bastards. ;D

I think The Great Gatsby is one of the most overrated books of all time. It's an okay read, but really? I don't find it relavent today. There was sort of a big deal because for the incoming freshmen for next year, they chose that as their incoming book. I thought it was a horrible idea for multiple reasons. The first is that it is a book that 95+ percent of incoming freshmen will have read it already in high school. That alone makes it unworthy. Also, sorry to those who disagree, but I don't think it's relavent today really. 20s decadence? Just to compare, our book for our class was The Trial by Franz Kafka. Even though it wasn't my favorite, in a post-9/11 world, it is particularly salient. Last year's book was Things Fall Apart. And for 2006, The Great Gatsby. One of these is not like the others, can you guess which one?
