Daniel Deronda- Gwendolyn is an annoying spoiled brat who turns into treacle at the end, Daniel and Mirah are Marty Stu/Mary Sue clones.

I don't like Jodi Piccoult, which was surprising to me, as she cites Alice Hoffman as an author who inspired her, and I've never met an Alice Hoffman novel I didn't enjoy reading. Even if the story worked itself out in a way I'd not hoped for. Jodi Piccoult is just ponderous to me. Same with Anita Shreve. I've had people say, "You don't like Jodi Piccoult? How can you not like her novels?" And I think to myself, "How can you like them?" But I don't say it. We all have different tastes.

I can't stand Piccoult. She's like reading an episode of Oprah. A really long winded, impressed with herself episode of Oprah. Shreve I like well enough to read if someone hands me down a copy of her books, but I'd never think to buy it myself.

I hated My Sister's Keeper. The ending was a total copout.

My newest literary UO is that not every successful novel needs to be made into a damn series, damnit. I know the publishing industry is desperately looking for the next Harry Potter/Twilight franchise, but if I encouter one more decent to mediocre book that was unjustifiably turned into a line of novels I'm just going to scream.

Also, the Percy Jackson series isn't that great either. The writing style isn't very engaging IMO. I agree. It wasn't even how much the story 'borrowed' from Harry Potter - Lord knows, JKR borrowed plenty from other stories herself - it just wasn't fun to read. It was a chore for me to finish and it's a kid's book, so I can't imagine how boring it must be for a 10 year old.

I agree with you about Mirah, but thought Gwendolyn and Daniel had some of the best literary chemistry between the two of them that I've ever read--enough to make me stay up till five in the morning first time I read it just to find out what happened to the two. As far as Jodi Picoult--I liked the first book I read by her ( Harvesting the Heart, IIRC the title correctly) but that's it. My (very, very) unpopular literary opinion is that the only Jane Austen book I really like is Pride and Prejudice. I've read the others, and they were fine, but I've never really felt the desire to go back and reread them.

I'm reading Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (yeah, I know, 15 years after the rest of the world), but it's taking everything I have not to hurl the damn book across the room. So far, everyone's so overdramatic and self-absorbed and twee that I want to go on a slapping spree.

I haven't read it myself, but I remember being disappointed to learn that the book wasn't actually about Southern drag queens, as depicted on the cover.
