I tend to prefer a nice fluffy (as long it's good fluff) chick lit read to the "literary" bestsellers. I find most literary books rather boring, and if that makes me silly and frivolous, so be it.
That felt good.

I hate Jane Austen. Hate her writing style. Me four. George Eliot was better. And yeah, Hawthorne's short stories are some brilliantly fucked-up stuff! Woot! I've discovered of late that I... hate contemporary literature. Doesn't that sound lame and uninformed? But really, unless it has some sort of historical context, I don't care.

That felt good. Whoa, don't ever apologize for liking what you like! I do go for the literary stuff, but now and then I need a good piece of trash. And for those times, I have on hand the exquisite filth of Jacqueline Susann! I'll pick up Once is Not Enough or Valley of the Dolls, open the book up to any ol' where and instantly sink into bliss. Where would we be without books like that for a good trash break?

I'm jumping on the Jane Austen bandwagon. I couldn't get through Pride and Prejudice. The POV switched around so many bloody times, I couldn't stay in anyone's head long enough to care what was going on. Constant and unnecessary POV shifts work my nerves something fierce.

I remember liking Emma better than Pride and Prejudice. But on the whole, I find Jane Austen slow reading. I haven't picked up one of her books in years.

I always hated Catcher in The Rye. Read it in high school and have hated ever since. I read it again a yr ago, and it still sucked monkey balls.

I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread yet! So many books from school I disliked (Actually, only four) This hasn't been mentioned before, but The Sound Of Waves. I hate hate hated it. I was shocked when I found out the author was gay, because there was so much discussion of underage boobies in that book. Maybe if I reread it I might change my mind, but as for now no.
I too thought Holden whined too much in Wanker In The Rye.
Also passionately disliked the not-yet-mentioned Ethan Frome and Lord Of the Flies.

So much love. Jacky could write some engaging trash.
Sandra Cisneros needs to go away, soon.

I loathed Lord of the Flies. I read it in school and I'll never read it again.

Is it just me or was The Secret Life of Bees really patronizing to black women?
