I'm finally reading Emma (after being an Austen fan forever and owning the book for a decade), and all I can say is that Austen's statement that she was presenting a heroine who would probably be liked only by her creator is spot-on.

I reread all of Austen this summer except for Emma. I just couldn't bring myself to read it again.

That makes me feel better, Peggy. It's not just Emma herself -- it's the endless niggling conversations the characters have. Reminds me of how my husband and his family can have these endless, pointless conversations over some incredibly minor occurrence that took place four decades earlier. Like being trapped in a house with Mrs. Bennet, Lydia, Kitty, and Mary. Gah.

I love Austen, too, but have never been able to make it through Emma. I saw the recent BBC miniseries a couple of months ago and I kept thinking, "Wow, Emma is such an asshole." I wish Mr. Knightley had run off with Harriet Smith or something. Surprisingly, I didn't hate the character of Emma as much when she was played by HRH Gwyneth. Or maybe I was just distracted by Jeremy Northam.

Funny, I liked Emma. It's Mansfield Park that I loathe.

My college professor who taught classes in 19th-century novels had the opinion that the film adaptation that captured Emma best was Clueless, and strongly preferred referencing it over the period adaptations.

I only finished it because I had to for a class. The relationships were so complicated I had to keep a chart in my notebook to keep track of everyone.

Talk about the movie made me remember my utter loathing for "On the Road." I fucking hated every character in that misbegotten waste of paper.
