Oooh, good new suggestions. I was kinda burning out on Oates.

Because it's never too early to start getting in the mood for Halloween, I started Joe Hill's Heart-Shaped Box last night. So far, so good.

I have yet to read anything by the horror-writin' Spawn of King. I skimmed We're All In This Together a couple years back, but haven't read anything by the other son.

OK, Heart-Shaped Box was overrated, but still a fun quick read. Unlike his dad, Joe Hill is very concise, which I think worked against him a little bit--there were many elements that King would have riffed on delightfully for for pages and pages (the very peculiar items in a rock star's macabre collection, the bond between the guys in his band, a dark road trip across America) which got short shrift here. It's a little unfair to compare him with the King, but I think it's inevitable. I also don't think he's in touch with his darkness yet; the book is a little more light-hearted than I was expecting. Still, a promising debut. And I will pick up a copy of 20th Century Ghosts in the future.
And now what to read? I'm torn between Something Wicked This Way Comes or the Mammoth Book of Haunted House Stories. Or something else totally, completely random.

It's macabre without being gut-churning (if you know what I mean). And I actually dreamed about the Dust Witch after I read it.

I looooooove Something Wicked This Way Comes. I actually wrote a paper on it in college. A memorable (and quotable) novel.

Something Wicked it is. I put a hold on it at the library, and it should come in a few days before Halloween. In the meantime, I think I'll keep myself busy reading the anthology Dark Forces. I've had it for years, but I only ever read "The Mist" for some reason...

So, here's a random question for a winter's day that is particularly spooky-dreary in my neck of the woods: What's your favorite horror story ever? Can be a novel, novella, short fic, screenplay, whathaveyou. I was thinking about it the other night and I've decided that my favorite horror story is Joan Aiken's "He," which I found in fifth grade in her collection, A Touch of Chill: Tales for Sleepless Nights.

My most recent favorite horror story would probably be Cell by Stephen King or World War Z by Max Brooks.

While book shopping on my birthday I picked up a "new" (published in '78) horror novel, The House Next Door, by Anne Rivers Siddons. I got it mostly for the novelty of it, (I had no idea she'd written any horror) and it's great. It's...weirdly quiet, in a way that just creeps me the hell out. Plot revolves around murderous paranormal goings-on in a modern house, which is something I've wanted to see in horror fic.
