My obsession with Stephen King started a long time ago. Everyone is mildly obsessed with Stephen King around here. We are from Maine, after all. Live about an hour from him, actually. Anyway, I've met him numerous times, and he's rather nice. Creepy, kind of. But nice. It's impossible for me to pick a favorite book of his. However, The Man in the Black Suit is probably my favorite short story. It's creepy to me, because we spend a lot of time in the woods where I live. Fishing, hiking, hanging out, whatever. When I was little, that's ALL we would do. And the woods that he describes (because most of his stories are based in Maine) sound just like our woods. I dunno, it was just creepy for me. Most of the stuff that creeps me out in his books is the familiarity of the surroundings. The fact that I've BEEN to those places. He's mentioned my hometown more than once......creepy.

Same here, aidansmom. My tiny little town got a mention in Tommyknockers and I was so proud. Really, doesn't every small town in Maine have a Barrens? My friends and I used to pretend we were the Losers too. I even bought myself a slingshot at LL Bean when I was 11. All the slingshots apparently had a 3-letter code on the bottom and mine said "BEV", which terrified me.
My favorite short story by him is "Strawberry Spring". I recited that at a speech competition and had such a good time with it.

I was slightly advanced in my reading when I was younger. So when our 6th grade teacher asked for a book report about any book we wanted, I chose Christine. They were oral reports.
So I got up in front of my class and began to describe the book. And I left nothing out. Their little eyes got huge, and my teacher cut me off. It's a wonder she didn't call my mom and ask her if something was wrong with me.
To shift gears slightly, I just want to mention Rose Madder. It's been mentioned before, but I just read it again recently, and I had totally forgotten how horrible her husband was in it. I think it really shows his abiltity to write reality. Some of my favorite stories of his are The Body and Shawshank Redemption, two stories that have no supernatural elements.

Oooh, I love The Tommyknockers! Which seems to be an unpopular opinion among King fans. It's too long (of course) but so trashy and fun.

I own The Tommyknockers, and I've tried to read it countless times, but I can never get into it and I'm not sure why. That's the only book of his that I haven't read. Maybe someday I'll get through it.
For some reason, Desperation has always been my favorite Stephen King book. I can read that one over and over again. And I also found The Long Walk to be terrifying; whenever I read it, I think about what it would be like if it was me on the Long Walk, and it freaks me out a little bit.

A reminder - tomorrow night, King fans! Nightmares and Dreamscapes 9 PM and 10 PM on TNT! Apparently, they're doing it hour-long episode style, even though it's technically a mini series. 9 PM will be Battleground and then at 10 PM will be Crouch End. They'll be running them for the next three weeks after that, totalling the four week miniseries - I'd guess at 9 PM and 10 PM again for the following three Wednesdays, but after tomorrow night's airings, check your listings for the following three Weds. in case I'm wrong.

Crouch End was pretty crappy and I place all the blame on the shoulders of Claire Forlani. Cannot. act. for crap.
Right now I'm reading Hearts in Atlantis again. *sigh* I love Bobby - in all his characterizations. I haven't seen the movie though.

"Battleground" with no commercials and no dialogue--that was quite neat! Nice to see something a little different on TV.

I've only read ROSE MADDER(which sucked) and ON WRITING (which I loved). I got an ARC for his new one coming this fall. If anyone really wants let me know. Really wants!!!!!!!!! And yeah, I forgot all about N&D on TNT. *smacks forehead* I'm sure they'll be rerun, so I'll have to look and see when they're on again. DOH!

Ditto on the opinions of the first episodes of N&D.
