The parents in The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon also had problems. They were divorced but then end up having grief sex.

Gawd, Tom Gordon. I've forgotten most of that one but mainly I remember thinking that for a really short book, it sure seemed like it was about 800 pages long.

I've only read ROSE MADDER(which sucked) and ON WRITING (which I loved). I got an ARC for his new one coming this fall. If anyone really wants let me know.

I went through this whole thread (skimmed) and didn't see mention of Richard Bachman's "Thinner". I read it as a teenager, and really loved it. I told my Dad about the story and for years, he'd walk by me and touch me with one finger and say "Thinner".
I haven't read much of King since my teens and early twenties. I am on hiatus this summer and need to stock up on books. I'm going to hit the used book store in the morning.
On my list: The long walk. and the last rung on the ladder sounded good too.

So, when I was 15, I was stuck at home for a couple of weeks with a serious upper respitory infection/bronchitis. Wandering around the house while my parents are at work, what did I decide to start reading? The Stand, because that's the perfect book to read when you're hacking up some icky looking stuff--positive that you're going to die.
My favorite book of his is Different Season. Rita Hayworth and The Shawshank Redemption and The Body are both very well written, and The Breathing Method is deliciously creepy. Though, I can't get into Apt Pupil.

I loved Tom Gordon! It had a pretty good and creepy plot, with the little girl stuck in the woods...it was easy to imagine myself in her place. The thing I didn't like was the monster stalking her at the end. The story was compelling enough just as the tale of her trying to get back, the monster seemed like the publisher said, "Hey, Steve, where's one of your patented creepy things? We need a monster here!"
