I hope I'm not the only Kinkophile on the board. Anybody else out here love his stuff as much as I do? I know the mystery plots themselves don't seem to impress hard-core mystery fans, but let's face it. You don't read the Kinkster for plot. You read him because he's like literary crack, and oh-so-quotable.
Discuss.

Isn't he running for governor of Texas or something? I saw him on a show on the Trio network about Texas hosted by Christopher Hitchens, and he was singing a rendition of "Okie from Muskogee" that he had changed to "Asshole from El Paso." It included lines about virgins and wetbacks, and the whole thing seemed kind of not PC at all. I had no idea he was an author. I thought he was a musician.

bellita, he's sort of a modern day Renaissance man. Musician, author, future Governor of Texas... And he is definitely un-PC. His band is called The Texas Jewboys. But's it's all sort of self-deprecating, and well ... Kinky.

Having lived in Austin for a few years I heard about Kinky a lot but never read anything. Do either of you Kinkophiles have a recommendation for someone wanting to read one?

His books make me laugh. I've read all the novels involving the "Village Irregulars" and Kill Two Birds and Get Stoned. Kill Two wasn't as enjoyable as the rest but it was a fun read.
I was so disappointed to hear that Ten Little New Yorkers will be his last book featuring the "Village Irregulars". I haven't read it yet, and since it's the end I may put it off for a while. Hopefully he'll come up with some new characters that are as funny and strange as the old ones.

Kill Two Birds didn't impress me too much either to me. It was more like Kinky-Lite. The last one?! Where will I be without Ratso? And Rambam (yes, Rambam's one of my literary crushes)? And the dancing lesbians upstairs? The book that got me started was Armadillos and Old Lace. It doesn't have the Village Irregulars in it so much, but it got me hooked on his style right away. If you want to start from the beginning, I'd go with Greenwich Killing Time.

Did any Texans watch him tonight in the Governatorial candidate debate? Yeah, I don't think I'll be voting for him.
Did he really need to have the cigar up there in his hand during the debate?

One of my brushes with fame! I got to talk to him briefly when setting up an interview with him for a magazine I worked on a number of years ago. He was really nice and friendly in the brief time that I talked to him. I think we were interviewing him because of his animal rescue/shelter work.
I never have gotten around to reading his books. It's good to have some idea of where to start now.

I read Spanking Watson back in college and enjoyed it. After that I haven't seen it again! It even disapeared from the library.
