I love Margaret Frazer's historical mysteries set in late medievel England. They have good characters and historical detail, but they're not dry.

Ooh, I like those too. Also the series she did as Mary Monica Pulver. Peter Brichter is a cool character, and Murder at the War was a great introduction to the Society for Creative Anachronism.
Sharon Kay Penman has a good medieval series going too, plus her historical fiction is grand.

PearlySweetcake, you might also like Andrew Vachss, John Connolly and Dennis Lehane's Kenzie/Gennarro series. Ben Affleck directed a movie of one of Lehane's books, "Gone, Baby, Gone," which is coming out later this year. On the one hand, I really want to see it; on the other, I'm afraid he's butchered one of my favorite books.

JenniPoo, just wanted to mention how much I love both your Andy Griffith icon/quote and your sig quotes!
Am listening to Anne Perry's WWI series on tape while I do needlework. I'm not as fond of any of the characters yet as I am of William Monk, but I'm finding the series very informative.

I'm a huge fan of Agatha Christie!!! I also like Dorothy L. Sayers and Nancy Atherton writes cute, cozy mysteries. I also like the Agatha Raisin mysteries by M.C. Beaton.
Has anyone read J.D. Robb's "In Death" series? I read the first two or three and then got bored with the series. Has anyone read the more recent ones?

OOOH, I'm totally geeked right now. I just emailed one of my fave lite mystery writers, Denise Swanson, and she totally wrote me back. Like within the hour!
Ooohh! I'm so excited. (She writes the hilarious Scumble River books.)

mrsbowling, I totally understand your geeking out. I e-mailed my favorite author, Phil Rickman a while back (he writes a series of supernatural-themed mysteries) and was insanely thrilled when he wrote back. I had asked about some music he'd had one character listening to and in his response, he wrote it as if he'd asked the character and she'd responded, i.e, "Jane says it was probably the Rings Around the World album she was listening to." Considering how great a job he does in making the characters come alive, it seemed totally natural.
And now I'll add Denise Swanson to my list of authors to check out.
