Did Bella Swan invent the sewing needle, the French braid, and the domesticated puppy? I think not. Yeah, but on he other hand, Bella is so... void and annoying, yet inexplicably everyone loooooves her anyway. Is that more Sue-tastic than SuperAyla? I gotta know!

Do you think there's any chance that this is actually a reference to the fact that as homosapiens evolved and walked upright that women's hips began to shift backwards enlongating the vagina, and that men's penises had to compensate with length? Instead fo it being a ridiculous marysue porn thing that it actually highlights a good biological 'fit' in an evolving species?
Nah.

I'm trying to figure out at what point I left off the series--I don't remember it, but since Plains of Passage came out in 1990, there's a fair chance I read it in high school. I'm sure I've never read Shelters of Stone.
You say Nah, but I would not be surprised if this were the case.
Depends on your definition of Sue, I think. Ayla is the Super Sue who is gifted by the author with abilities and accomplishments, Bella is the Slug Sue who is gifted by the author with love and attention.
Jonayla vs. Renesmee--which is the worse name?

Renesmee, because at least Jonayla makes some sort of sense in the context of the whole Earth's Children world. There's been a precedence already for children's names being based on/variations of a parent's. Renesmee is just stupid.
Time to hit TVTropes.org! (I know they have a Biggus Dickus catagory, too.)
ETA: Okay, whilst reading the entry over at TVTropes, I was reminded of the Asian character, Jerika, and her father, Hocheman. And how did it escape me before that (especially since Auel is not always subtle with her names... Crozie = cranky old woman, or Fralie = frail young mother, for example) Hocheman sounds an awful lot like Ho-Chi-Minh.

At the risk of not getting the joke, hominids walked upright at least 3 million years ago, which was way before the brains embiggened, so it would be more a question of scale to overall skeletal size (Lucy was only about 3'6, so Mr Lucy would have likely been proportionally endowed). I get that it could be a metaphor, but for a series as allegedly well-researched as she says it is, it's more porny-romantycal than anything. There's a lot of recent evidence supporting the idea that H. sapiens neanderthalensis (or, H. neanderthalensis, depending) and H. sapiens sapiens were totally doin' it. Some scientists think it's a controversial hypothesis but I kind of wonder if they're just squicked out. </nerd> I am totally going to reread these now. I thought Jean M. Auel was totally dead.

I thought she was dead, too.
There are Asian characters?! Now I know I haven't read the last books.

Nope, not a joke. I catch those Discovery specials once in awhile and that was the first thing that popped into mind when I read the original quote. Thanks for filling in the holes. (Oh! And that wasn't a pun, either. *blushes*) I wouldn't doubt it at all if Neanderthals and Homosapiens interbred. Why wouldn't they???

I got my hands on an uncorrected proof copy of The Land of Painted Caves (gf works in a library, yay!) and, man, it's pretty bad.
I'm almost halfway through and NOTHING has happened so far. She repeats and repeats and repeats. It's crap we already know, not just repeating from previous novels to remind us, but, literally, she mentioned this several pages ago, oh, here, let me tell you again, this tree is good for blah blah blah, these people like to live in groups because whatever.
I'm going to finish it, because, damn, I've read the others and it's been 30 damn years or some shit, but, it is not good.
The book has parts to it, she seems to be skipping several years, so I'm hoping for something fun or unexpected to pop up, but I'm not holding my breath.

Ha, just shipping. I hope to be done with it in a week maybe, though that may be a bit optimistic, it's 757 pages. I'll PM you when I've finished it.
