Totally agree. I mean, if you want want to write porn, write it, but it seems like a bunch of these women don't want to admit that they're basically writing out their sexual fantasies and half-assedly cloak it with a "supernatural" plot. (Or should I write, supernatural "plot.") And you know, it's not like genre stuff is devoid of sex scenes as a rule. George R.R. Martin has no lack of sexual shenanigans in his series, but he still manages to have a huge, intricate ongoing plot.
I wouldn't mind reading a real vampire novel - like say, Salem's Lot or I Am Legend. Where the vampires are actually vicious and nasty and will kill you. I liked the first few Anne Rice novels and still like her idea of vampire as protagonist, but I think it's mostly played out. Somehow "dark" has been replaced by "emo" in that genre. I can't remember the last time I read a vampire book where the vampires were actually, you know, scary. I also don't get the point of writing about supernatural things if you're going to take away everything that makes them supernatural except that they are abnormally sexy and live forever.
Also chiqui I just read that book not too long ago! I was on vacation in Austin and picked up a bunch of "fantasy" books at a used bookstore. Such a bad book. The main character is a textbook Mary Sue - discovers magical powers that are not only more magical than everyone else's but are also unique to her because she's the only non-pureblood whatever she is to have them, has a harem of men who serve and adore her because she's the only spunky, compassionate female around (even the devil loves her!)...bleeeccchh. And the sex is bad. I wouldn't have such a huge issue with these supernatural porn books if they were labeled as such and stopped infiltrating my horror/scifi/fantasy section, but the sex is always. so. bad. Also, I am pretty sure all of these books have the exact same plot - vampire/vampire hunter/fairy princess/alien queen who for magical-political reasons must fall into bed with a flock of Fabio-type men. Oh well. I didn't buy the Christine Feehan novel I just saw in my own used bookstore, so it looks like I dodged that bullet anyway.
ETA: Eek, crossposted. And Auroranorth managed to say it all in one sentence.
