Bumping this because she graduated University last month with a 2:1 degree, so I have to ask-as I'm always confused about what the UK degrees mean-what does it mean?

This seems to explain it fairly well:

A 2.1 is equivalent to an A-/B+

In British universities you either get an honours or a pass degree. Honours are 1st, 2.1, 2.2 and 3rd. A pass is a pass.
1st - excellent score, only the brightest students get this
2.1 - very good score, but not quite good enough to be a first class honours student
2.2 - good solid performance
3 - honours, but not covering yourself in glory
Pass - showed up for lectures and sat the exams with a bit of work done

I think it depends how academic you are and how academically rigorous your university is. And what you're studying, of course.

At my university getting less than a 2.1 would be considered not great, unless you struggled with academics. For example you generally need at least a 2.1 to get into grad school. Personally I missed getting a First by something like half a percentage point, so I'm just bitter.
But yes, she did very well.
