Bumping this because she graduated University last month with a 2:1 degree, so I have to ask-as I'm always confused about what the UK degrees mean-what does it mean?

I think it depends how academic you are and how academically rigorous your university is. And what you're studying, of course. At my university getting less than a 2.1 would be considered not great, unless you struggled with academics. For example you generally need at least a 2.1 to get into grad school. Personally I missed getting a First by something like half a percentage point, so I'm just bitter. But yes, she did very well.
