A beautiful christmas flower arrangement might be nice (not poinsettas. If you go to a florist they have some nice, creative arragnements that are very elegant) and a box of treats.
I seriously doubt that other parents are going to spend $100. I used to spend about $40 on my daycare lady, when I could afford it, but she was also a friend and also not at all well off.

Another idea might be something from Harry and David or another company like Swiss Colony. Last year, I bought my aunt and uncle this basket, and my aunt told me that she had no idea that pears could be so delicious.

Gift question for parents around here - what do you consider the best (cost-wise) websites for buying toys? I've just confirmed that I have to buy the slide I'm getting my nephew on-line, because stores only stock it in the Summer. Wal-Mart has the best price I've found so far, but they charge for shipping. Before I do that, I was just wondering if there were some better priced websites I should check.

This thread doesn't look too lively but I'm desperate - can anyone suggest a gift for a 6 year old boy? This should be extravagant/indulgent rather than practical in any ways, PSPs and the like are out, and the upper price limit is US$300.
PLEASE if anyone has any ideas let me know!

Foxfair, what are the little dude's interests? We just spent $200 + on a guitar, stand, strap, case, and lessons for our (5 yr old) son this year. Does he like video games? Because you could get a few Spongebob or Sonic the Hedgehog or Monkeyball games for Nintendo Gamecube or Playstation 2. My kids have asked for a VideoNow thingy, which retails for about $50, and then you have to buy the movies and stuff that come with it. (I didn't buy it for them. They already have PS2, Gamecube, DVD players, Nintendo PSPs, etc.) Also, we have had great success with stuff from the Discovery store. Hope that helps!

My wife ran across a great gift for kids 4-6. It is Lite Bright FX. A piece of rectangular paper spins and you drop neon paint on it. It has a black light and plays a very syntho/dance house music, so doing in the dark is very cool. My 5 yr old daughter loves this thing. We went through the first 4 bottles of paint in two days.
It has a very trippy feel to it so I am betting that the college crowd would have a blast under certain mind altering conditions.

Does the kid have room for a bounce house? I was going crazy trying to find a gift for my sister-in-law. She's really hard to buy for; usually, I give her and my brother gift certificates to restaurants that I know they like, but that's not financially feasible this year. I finally bought her a book that I think is a great gift for hard-to-buy-for women: "Bitter With Baggage Seeks Same." You really have to see it to appreciate how funny it is.

Foxfair, if there is room for it, an air hockey table is lots of fun for kids that age (and older). Batboy keeps going on about Star Wars stuff (there's the interactive light saber game where you weild a light sabre and battle with someone on TV. Sorry, don't remember the name) as well as build your own light sabres.
If the child is into a sport, an authentic jersey is a huge treat (you're looking at $200 plus).

I just received a welcome mat that says, "Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit look who's here!
It is at the entrance to my cubby/cell and I love it! Everyone who walks by just cracks up. I highly recommend.
