I just ordered my Mom's present yesterday. She had a doctor's appointment not too long ago, and the receptionist put a little bit of the Philosophy Amazing Grace lotion on my Mom's hands. She loved it! She never expects big gifts, and she LOVES fragrances, so I ordered her a big bottle of the lotion from Sephora. I'm having it shipped to her in one of their pretty wrapped gift boxes.

Oh I love Amazing Grace...I've given it as presents before and it's always gone over well.

Aw, fuck. I totally forgot. I have no clue. Both of my parents are the worst people to buy gifts for, and I they get pissed when I say "I don't know" to their queries about what I want. They're the same way, and say something like, "You don't have to get me anything." That is such crap! Everyone always wants some material good! Throw me a bone! Anyway, I have no clue whatsoever as to what I'll get her. What day is Mother's Day? Next Sunday? I swear to you, I am so trapped in this insular bubble. I have no clue what's going on in the outside world. I don't have a TV, so internet news and this site are basically how I keep in touch. I'd get her flowers or something, but it's such a wasted gift. She won't take care of them. Shit, I have no ideas! ARGH![/Annoying Cathy-style outburst] ETA: I just ordered her something on Amazon. Wastefully, I had it shipped here first so I could add a card and some other things to it. I got her the Betty Broderick movie that always airs on Lifetime. It's sort of an inside joke, but basically my mom and one of her sister are suckers for Lifetime movies. They could sit all day and watch Lifetime movies. I don't know why they get into them, but I've actually seen the Betty Broderick one, and it's decent. They're really into murder/mayhem CourtTV stuff, so I'll send it with some Junior Mints and a card and they can knock themselves out. Lame, I know, but there's actually a chance I could get it there by Sunday. Actually, I think Mother's Day is May 14th, so you have some time. On the other hand...wow...I had NO idea the Betty Broderick movie was on DVD. That movie is my crack. I just might order it for myself for Mother's Day.

I love Philosophy stuff -- and I think really nice hand lotions always make a wonderful gift.
I'm going to make my mom some jewelry, she likes me to do that for all her special occasion gifts. I just got some beautiful deep red chunky coral, I think it would make a really pretty bracelet....I need to work with it and see what I can come up with.....

I should take this to the Unpopular Movie Opinions thread, but I LOVE the Betty Broderick movie! And no kidding, it was on the other night, and I had to actually force myself not to watch it - I think it was on Wednesday night, maybe, and I had to convince myself - "Come on! You've seen it a million times, and if you watch it, you'll miss The Amazing Race, whoever gets kicked off of American Idol, and Lost!" It was a struggle! And the thing that's funny is, I hate the Lifetime channel! When I worked at ABC TV, and all of us were getting laid off with the Disney takeover, all of our resumes were being put out on the grapevine by many well meaning individuals. Someone sent my resume to Lifetime, and they called me for an interview! I very nicely turned them down, because secretly, I thought, God, I can't stomach working there!

My mom's getting her third year of a Canadian House and Home subscription (she's getting it next year, too). It's not imaginative (although I first got it for her in a burst of inspiration) and she always knows what's she's getting, but she likes it.
My mother in law on the other hand? I have no idea. And deadduck's no help, despite it being his mother. I must think upon this.

What sorts of things does she like, or enjoy doing? Who knows, if we all think about it, perhaps we can come out with something which might sound good to you.

Her cheif interests seem to be bossing my father in law around and haranguing deadduck and his sister about various topics. A close second is shopping for Batgirl.
She likes watching curling on TV, reading books by Maeve Binchy, and some movies.

Batmom, you're not giving me much to work with here! ;D Are there any particular movies she loves but doesn't own? Any old Hollywood movie stars she really, really likes? Actually, if she likes the olden era of Hollywood at all, she may enjoy David Niven's biography which is chock full of anecdotes on every star/personality around: from Clark Gable to Errol Flynn, W.R. Hearst to Hedda Hopper; Bogey and Bacall, and more.
Is there a DVD showing the best of Olympic Curling through the years?
Does she enjoy any hobbies like cooking, quilting, gardening?
If she's got a good sense of humour and you have a good relationship with her, perhaps a dry, funny humour book on couples who have been married for years. Something like Dave Barry's type of teasing humour about the pitfalls and joys of marriage. Or would she think that wholly inappropriate?
If all else fails, a basket of body pampering stuff from Lush or some similar store is often a hit with women.
