Count me in on the Diners love. The other day the Food Network had a whole day marathon of the show - it was glorious. I'm a vegetarian but I can't stop drooling over most of the stuff he eats. My sisters and I joke that when Giada and Rachel are eating on their travel food shows they'll nibble or take one bite and move on - Guy stuffs burger after burger down his throat.
I think there was a new Barefoot Contessa show on tonight. I PVR'ed it. I love Ina & Geoffrey.
Also love Ace of Cakes. My Mother thinks that the cakes they make can't taste that good but I say I don't see people shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars for cakes that look good but taste like crap.

Having watched enough episodes of Drivers... you can tell when he's really not into something. He's nice but he tends to pick out a small thing to compliment. He says something like, "Hmmm, you can really taste the pepper in that." Heh, WitchyPoo, do you mean Diners... Yay for the Diners... love! I totally agree with the poster who said Guy isn't great at covering when he doesn't like something - I can't remember the one I saw last week on-line, but he was not very enthusiastic, but being polite - then I saw another episode where he was fist-bumping the chef, loving the food. I want to go to many of these places to eat, as well! ITA - the people on Ace of Cakes must be half-baked. Especially Geof and Ben (who needs to wash his hair). The actual edible cake never looks all that appealing - maybe it tastes great? Does fondant taste okay? Oh, it's neat that Throwdown won some people over regarding Bobbly Flay (I had only ever seen him on Iron Chef, and on a BBQ type show - and he was a bit intense, maybe? Showboating, I think.) I agree, too, that he does seem quite gracious when he loses, but I think he seems like quite a competitor as he's quite successful in the food business.

It seems like people either love or hate it. I am firmly in the LOVE category. Tastes like a little bit of heaven to me!

After watching all of the cake shows, I don't ever want to eat fondant again. When I watch the competitions and see how much touching and reusing of all of the fondant; it looks unappetizing.

Holiday, I had a chance to taste an Ace of Cakes cake at a wedding show. Meh. Not much taste and the presentation was bleh. We went with a baker who had delicious cakes and served them neatly on a plate. I can't watch the show because I get tired of the yelling and my husband (a dabbler with cakes and deserts) can't stand how messy they are. I'm not crazy about fondant; whenever there's a cake with a lot of it, most of it stays on my plate.

I'm a big fan of Diners, but I gotta admit Guy bugs me. Not as bad as RayRay, but I still want to rip those backwards sunglasses off his head.
Generally I wish FN would steer away from the "celebrity chef" biz and all its accompanying nonsense, and just focus on good cooking shows. Barefoot Contessa is a good example. I don't need to see Paula Deen in her pajamas cooking with D-list celebrities. I just want to see good cooking.

One show a few weeks addressed had one of the Ace of Cakes employees (Mary Alice, maybe?) complain whinily that people wonder if the cakes are any good. I often wonder that myself, because they never talk about the flavor of the cake batter, like whether the manta ray cake was pistachio flavored or vanilla. The narrative is only about construction.

Well, I know that it tasted like most generic wedding cakes, not horrible, but nothing to write home about. I know some people who were at the pirate cake episode and they had the same reaction to that cake too, so it wasn't just samples. I think they're more artists who happen to work with cake and sugar and fondant rather than bakers. Which is fine, they come up with some great designs, just not what you want if you want something delicious.

Ah that would be a disappointment for me - I hate it when a dessert looks good and tastes like crap. False advertisting. I'd rather have a less flashy, more tasty cake.
A new Barefoot Contessa show started this week. My sisters and I joke that the only male friends Ina has are gay because Geoffrey doesn't want her leaving him and running away with one of them.
