MTV's The 70's House

The premise: take a bunch of 20-somethings who think they are going to be on a Real World/Road Rules type show, and instead put them in a house straight from the 70's, take away all of their technological devices, make them talk in 70's slang, and wear lots of polyester. Also, if the Hustle plays over the house speakers, they must drop whatever they are doing and dance.
Anyone else catch the first episode? Any thoughts?

I thought it was a bit funny. Dawn cracked me up as she seemed to be channeling Parker Posey in Dazed and Confused. What I can't get over is how foreign so much of the 70's is to these kids. These kids have never seen or heard of a rotary phone? Don't they have grandparents?

All in all I think it will be a cute show, but someone needs to point out to these kids that the theme is the 1970's and not the 1770's. It wasn't that long ago and you will survive without cell phones, cd's, laptops & cable. The way they reacted you'd think they were sent to the little house on the prairie.

*LOL* I don't have to watch this--I grew up in a real life '70s house.

and I didn't have the internet, a cell phone (still don't own that one), and I had to get up to change the channels (of which I remember there were only 15 or so).

You had 15? Lucky. I had the big 3, PBS and one independant channel that came on after 11 pm. That one I would sneak out of my room to watch Big Wilsons Night Owl Theater. Good times.

Now I am kinda missing the 70's.

Yeah, I had One channel that had all three networks alternating and PBS. That's back when we used to read or use our imaginations for entertainment. It's weird, but I remember no one having answering machines and somehow, not having one now would be weird. But then again, telemarketers were rare adn that was awesome.

It's weird when your life is now distant nostalgia. And it's also weird that people don't realize that the 70s had a wide variety of things going on. (Like not everyone listened to Disco).

I did have a Princess Phone. I hope they have one of those on their. And we did have a television with an eight track player and record player attached--with a remote that was connected with a cord to the television. (Pretty sweet, I know).

I don't get it. I mean, aside from the advance in communications technology, there isn't much difference between 2005 and 1975. Now, between 1965 and 1975, THAT was a difference, clothing-wise, social-wise, tech-wise, travel-wise, sex-wise. Jeeze, in 1965 women were still expected to wear gloves when out in public, girdles, and hair-spray laden beehive hairdoes. In most areas of the country it was still very acceptable to say 'n*gger.' Jet travel was still in its infancy. A long distance phone call was a big thing and only for emergencies. I'm showing my age, aren't I ?

As for polyester, a good many of todays' 'hot' women's fashions are made from polyester, so I don't get the revulsion.

I think TPTB at MTV are idiots, so maybe that's the problem. Plus, the '70s are "cooler" to these kids. I'm 28 and while I was mystified by the '70s, I have always considered the '60s to be way more interesting. If you look at the world in 1960 and then in 1970? Wow.

Just my two cents.

I suspect it is a big enough difference for these kids, although it sounds like they're taking it to a kitschy level, rather than what was reality for a lot of us. As with all MTV reality shows nowadays, though, I find myself wondering if everyone that age is that dumb and uncultured, or if it's just the people that will go on these shows in the first place. I hope for the latter, but suspect the first (with the exception of the smart young people here).

Wow! You guys were rich! Why, I remember only having one TV, with no remote, and having to hook up the Intellivision every time we wanted to play. Our 8 track was a stand alone, and the record player stood by itself in a lovely glass cabinet in the corner of the room.

Oh, and the TV had antennas on the top with tin foil wrapped around them.

I have to see this show! Kitschy or not, it sounds like MY childhood, at least.
