I used to think he was hot, but he's been looking a bit off lately.
He was supposed to be the Next Big Thing, but his career fizzled.
Irish version of Ryan Philippe?

He was sexy in Queen of the Damned but recently he's just been looking a bit plain.
Charlize overshadows him completely and yeah, he does have that Ryan Phillipe thing going on.

About Adam is one of my favorite films. I just loved him in that movie. And even thought he was the best thing in that crappy Queen of the Damned
I really think that the whole deal with LoTR really hurt him. He spent months working on that film believing that he would be tied up for a couple of years. There's no telling how many films he turned down in that time. His career really lost it's momentum after that. Of course it didn't help that he was kinda pissy about it. But I can sorta see where he was coming from. Though I will always think that Viggo was better suited for the role, PJ sorta did him wrong.
But he must be a pretty decent guy. Despite everything that happened he and Orlando have stayed really good friends. And he seems to be handling CT outshining him pretty well.

Did his career ever have momentum? Outside of Queen of the Damned and the LOTR that wasn't, I never had a reason to notice him. I'd say that at least in the USA someone as comparatively B-list as Ryan Phillippe had much more Next Big Thing hype. If we're talking of Brits so did Ewan McGregor until it became clear he wanted to be an actor and not a movie star.
Townsend himself? Meh. So sulky, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers does that more prettily.

I think so. He was working steadily since '95 in small or supporting rolls in films. Then after About Adam he got three leads one right after another QotD, Trapped and LoTR .

What were the reasons behind the whole LotR affair? Has he (or Peter Jackson) ever said anything about it? I don't know anything about this actor, except that he's with Charlize.

I've heard two rumors. The kinder one, is that he was just too young to bring the 'world-weary' Aragorn to life. The harsher one is that he wasn't committed enough to the role, and didn't have the chops PJ expected and needed for Aragorn.
I think ST definitely brings the pretty at certain times (QoD comes to mind, he was downright fine in League of Extrordinary Gentlemen, too), but Viggo was obviously the better choice for a character like Aragorn, imo at least.

In interviews where the situation has been mentioned, Jackson's reply to the question has been that they realized Townsend was just too young. It's rather polite and doesn't place blame on Townsend. However, I think lack of commitment might have had something to do with it as well since I've heard a couple of rumours of partying.
Perhaps Jackson got the studio to see that a young 'hot' couple with Townsend/Tyler just wouldn't be right - Tyler stayed because she was the bigger name and elves are meant to be pretty anyway. If the second rumour is true, though, Townsend must have been a pretty bad disappointment for them to ditch him when they had no replacement secured.
