Is anyone following this production? I somehow managed not to read the book, so I don't have much by which to judge its fidelity to the original. Sets and costumes are -of course!- gorgeous (or Dickensianly [!?] shabby and ratty, depending on locale!) and it's chockful of terrific actors. Any opinions on Gillian Anderson? She's looking scary-gaunt in the face, but I think she's effective in the role. What do you all think?

The show will be available on DVD on February 28th (according to Netflix). I missed it on MT, but I bet it is fantastic. I think that Masterpiece Theatre/ the BBC do amazing Dickens adaptations. I loved their version of Our Mutual Friend.

I agree. I always manage to miss them. I hope I can rent them, because they cost a pretty penny to buy it on DVD or video.

I'm completely engrossed with this production. I think Gillian is great as Lady Dedlock. I love the pacing, the production, etc. I think this is a first-rate production. Lots of suspense.

This has been a wonderful production, and I'm sad that it's ending this Sunday. Gillian Anderson is great as the wound-WAY-too-tight Lady Dedlock, and she and Charles Dance are amazing together on screen. His character, Tulkinghorn, is so cold and slimy, it's like his eyes could turn you into a block of ice. Really, every actor in it is well-cast and very talented.

Doesn't look like PBS is planning a rerun any time soon. Best to rent or buy it.

I will. I've had to do that with all the MT's Ive missed. They never re-run them, which is a shame, many of them deserve it.

They tend to re-air them at the strangest times. Like, Polyanna will be on on Tuesday at 2:30 or something completely random. They have been re-airing productions more often these days (they are going to show Henry VIII, He Knew He Was Right and the Sherlock Holmes with Rupert Everett in the near future). Not sure about Bleak House though. I imagine that it is much easier to fit a three hour program into a time slot than a six hour one like Bleak House. Still, the recent re-showings of other programs puts a re-broadcast into the realm of possibility.
Again, I am super-glad they have started releasing these things on dvd in a timely manner. Yay for dvd! Unfortunately, there are still quite a few MT/Mystery programs that have yet to be released on vhs or dvd. Oh well... can't complain too much.
