I just want to say, “Ben, you’re an actor. ACT. Smile. Glad hand. Wave. Beam. Pretend. It’s only for a few hours and then you can go back to your man cave.” He’s acting like a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Stevie Wonder from the front row at the Grammys is worse than a dental appointment. Ben can't act; his only Oscars are for writing and producing. He's been in three movies with current girlfriends with zero sexual chemistry. The movies are garbage, but the "real" part isn't working either. Ben. Affleck. Cannot. Act. I said this when I watched Gone Baby Gone and thought "Casey's the better actor". Who has the Oscar for acting? (HUGE CW) I think he can act. But it's gotta be the right material. I think he was great in The Town. Argo. Dogma. But he's definitely a better director than actor for sure.

He's not the kind of actor who can disappear into a role and is best suited to playing parts close to his own personality or experience. That said there are two films that I haven't seen that he might be good in - The Way Back and The Tender Bar. For me his worst performance was Shakespeare in Love, oof that was bad. And I don't remember a thing about his Batman movies. He made Batman boring.

If Ben is only good in certain roles - and those roles are basically playing guys who grew up like he did - is he really that good of an actor? Or is it just a guy who knows how to make movies and good casting directors know what a director can get out of him?

Plenty of actors have limited range, that doesn’t mean they are bad actors, they just have limited range. It still takes a level of skill be believable and connect with the audience within that narrow range. Actors who completely disappear into a role are few and far between.

In my book, actors and movie stars are not the same thing. Movie stars do well with limited range. You take a Ben Affleck, Julia Roberts, George Clooney or Jennifer Anniston and put them in a role that is similar to who they are in real life, and they are very entertaining and give us great movies to watch. But in my book, that's not the same as being a great actor. I think a great actor can embody characters from a wide range of roles and portray them convincingly. I think the most talented actors can move from medium to medium and are still great. I'd call all of the four I listed (and many others) great movie stars. I don't consider them to be great actors.

I agree. I know if I'm seeing a movie with Ben Affleck in it there's a good chance it's because I'm in desperate need of 20-dollar popcorn and air conditioning in the summer. If I'm seeing something he's in that he directed, it's gonna be something I'll actually enjoy. And I don't mind love stories on film to Boston. We're a neat little city, often overlooked in favor of our big bad sibling 200 miles south.
I also don't need to always see ACTING sometimes I just need a distraction. I don't consider the Marvel cinematic universe to be the heighth of culture but good golly sometimes you just need Chris Evans ass on a big screen right? And a movie can be a good movie without it being high art. Sometimes you want to go see 12 Years a Slave and have a moving experience. Sometimes you want to see Will Smith shoot an alien and yell "Welcome to Earth!"

Several friends of mine were involved in various ways with the Dazed and Confused film shoot here in Austin. I've heard from more than one that Ben didn't seem to understand that he didn't have to stay in character when he wasn't on camera....
