Hi, new here, but was on Fametracker (R.I.P.). Huge Beatles fan (see the name!), and I was wondering if anyone seen the new Peter Jackson documentary, “Get Back”?

Some folks have been talking about it over in the “What are you watching?” Topic in the Television section.

Awesome, thanks!
One question I would like to ask, what got you into the Beatles? For me, it was the “Beatles Anthology” in 1995. I was born in 1982, so the Beatles weren’t an active band and John was no longer alive, and most of my peers were listening to rap or alternative rock. I was devastated by Kurt Cobain’s death (Nirvana was the first band I was really into), and wanted to listen to other music, especially older stuff. I really fell in love with then, and my first searches on the Internet in 1997 were for Beatles content (some interesting, some not so much).

I fell in love with the early stuff as a toddler (the one radio station in town played Top 40 hits all day long, along with local and state news and the high school football games with my dad handling stats on the air), and the first record I ever requested that wasn't a Disney soundtrack was "Hey, Jude"--there were no record stores in our small town, so Dad went to the local music store and had the owner order a 45rpm copy of the song in question. Still my favorite...

I really fell in love with then, and my first searches on the Internet in 1997 were for Beatles content (some interesting, some not so much). Irish radio DJs in the 80s (second national station started broadcasting for younger audiences in early 80s) and 2 in particular Vincent Hanley who after leaving the radio then had a music video show MT USA on Sundays for three hours from New York oh the glamour! ( he would intro clips from Manhattan sometimes love mostly precrecorded) long before we had MTV here. Fab Vinny he would play the current ( 80s) Paul McCartney and George Harrison stuff and John Lennon a lot. My parents would go off on Sunday drives and I’d stay home and watch three hours of music. Bliss Sadly Vincent died from compications from AIDS age 33 in 1987. He left a legacy of introducing Irish teenagers to music and music videos we otherwise might never have heard. But it was Larry Gogan and his week day Golden Hour (which would be on when I was supposed to be doing homework)that really introduced me to The Beatles, The Stones, Bowie and others that came before 1982. The first Beatles songs I really remember him playing was Eleanor Rigby and Ob la di Larry was a legend and only stopped broadcasting in 2019 a year befor he passed away. For me The Beatles music is intertwined with memories of the DJs who played it .

My dad is a huge Beatles fan. I despise them. That is all.

LOL. No need for apologies. I should probably apologize for posting that here and not in the Stars I Hate thread. None of their music is my vibe and I think they're insanely overrated and overtalked about so I think I get irrationally angry when I even see the band name. Read "irrational" and that would be me when it comes to them. It might come from my dad's love for them and all of their non-Beatles projects too that contributed to this (I don't hate my dad, just his taste in music) so had to hear it on many childhood road trips.

I had Ron's book too. I was a teen when I read and thought it was neat, but still a little silly. I think it was published in 1979? At that time, even though the Beatles had long disbanded, Beatlemania was still going strong. The group was no longer present, but their looooong shadow was. That shadow took a very long time to fade. I think it's doing so now. They will always be classics as the Beach Boys are, as Led Zeppelin is, but they are not at the forefront of the public imagination as the "collective voice of a generation." That's long past. Post-Beatles youth seem to think of their childhood and teenhood idols with fondness, but they don't remain in their lives as presences. I don't think anyone who liked the Spice Girls or the boy band of the day, or even more highbrow groups like U2, follow them fanatically and take them as templates. You know, I am an older parent born to older parents. My mum and dad were way "too old" to be in the target demographic of the Beatles. My siblings were "too young" for the initial wave of Beatlemania. However, I was an odd kid, and I played the one lp that we did own constantly. My papa would also sing "Yesterday" all the time. One of my kids is six. More than a couple of the sweet little children books I have read very recently make reference to The Beatles. I must say I find it extremely adorable. I cannot bring myself to watch "Get Back" yet, because I know I will likely sob like a hungry angry baby, and I have to postpone my catharsis. One of the last gigs I saw before getting pregnant with my first kid was George's son's band"The New Number 2." I kind of loved it. While I found Ringo's "Vertical Man" uplifting I have heard lots of stories about him being VERY mean.

My mom and dad were from Liverpool. My dad went to the same school as Paul McCartney. My dad was out for lunch one day in Toronto, and Ringo Starr was there. My dad went over to meet him and they had a great chat. I would never have done anything like that! Needless to say, we were raised with Beatles music and I'm a huge fan.
I don't have access to Disney, just gave it up - doh! But I will definitely watch it when I have a chance.
