My mom and dad were from Liverpool. My dad went to the same school as Paul McCartney. My dad was out for lunch one day in Toronto, and Ringo Starr was there. My dad went over to meet him and they had a great chat. I would never have done anything like that! Needless to say, we were raised with Beatles music and I'm a huge fan. I don't have access to Disney, just gave it up - doh! But I will definitely watch it when I have a chance. My mum departed the UK on her first interactional trip from Liverpool!! I am so glad he had a lovely experience. That's just heartwarming. When I was last there a local actually called me "Ducks." I wanted to hug him. I resisted the urge. đ

LOL. No need for apologies. I should probably apologize for posting that here and not in the Stars I Hate thread. None of their music is my vibe and I think they're insanely overrated and overtalked about so I think I get irrationally angry when I even see the band name. Read "irrational" and that would be me when it comes to them. It might come from my dad's love for them and all of their non-Beatles projects too that contributed to this (I don't hate my dad, just his taste in music) so had to hear it on many childhood road trips. I get that, I am not a huge fan of âGone With the Windâ, and think its hype and its (lack of) substance is horrifically overrated, to the point where itâs virtually a hate crime on film to me. I can understand not liking a group that has been so integral to popular history for 50+ years and youâre feel like the contrarian oddball who âjust doesnât get itâ. I started to get into the band at a point where most of my peers saw the Beatles as something that it happened centuries ago.

I have an aunt (coincidentally named Maureen, like Ringoâs first wife) who is born in Widnes, a suburb near Liverpool. She is never a huge Beatles fan, because by the time she knew about the Beatles, they had already moved out of town. She is a bigger fan of Gerry and the Pacemakers because Gerrry Marsden (R.I.P.) still lived in Liverpool and they wrote songs like âFerry Across the Merseyâ, which reminds her of her hometown. Hell, when I took my 23 and Me ancestry kit, I have ancestry from the Merseyside! This shit is literally in my genes!

I went on the ferry when I was a kid, but all I remember is another kid got his foot trapped when he slid down the bannister. They had a lot of trouble getting him free. I did the Ancestry DNA test. Tracing my tree is rather annoying because they all moved to Liverpool or West Derby as soon as they were able to. There are other places in the country. Grr! LOL. No need for apologies. I don't think it's irrational at all. If you're not interested in something but you're constantly having to hear about the subject, apathy soon turns to dislike, then to outright hatred because someone's banged on about the subject that freaking much.

For context, I am 49 so yeah it has been my entire life. I feel like every few years it's like people re-discover the Beatles as if they're not everywhere all the time. I almost totally forgot: one of my most, uh, aggro relationships was with a boyfriend whose favorite band was The Beatles and he used to act like I had never heard of them. Grrr. I actually completely wiped that out of my brain until this moment lol. Growing up it was The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones and I am definitely a Rolling Stones person but again, that's just diff'rent strokes...
I understand the Gone with the Wind hate. I didn't watch it until a couple years ago (I live in Atlanta, so thought maybe I should check it out for context). As far as filmmaking, it's a great movie and I found parts of it surprisingly moving. It's not something I would re-watch, ya know?

It certainly doesnât help when you have people pimping them out to you like theyâre an obscure indie band that needs hypemen. I can see why you resent them! It does seem like a cyclical pattern of âre-discoveringâ a pop culture entity that has never gone away. Since I have gotten into the Beatles, I noticed the pattern of renewal youâve mentioned: 1994-1995: releases of Beatles at the BBC, Beatles Anthology, and the Internet 2000: success of the Beatlesâ 1 driven by millennial purchase power 2003: release of Let it Be Naked and the discovery of the January 1969 session tapes 2007: release of the Across the Universe musical 2009: the iTunes debut, remasters, and Rock Band: The Beatles2017-2019: Giles Martin remasters of SPLHCB, The White Album, and Abbey Road2020-2021: COVID-19 pandemic comfort listening and the The Beatles: Get BackIâm a mild fan of the Rolling Stones, but there would be no Rolling Stones without the band that proceeded them (George Harrison encouraged the Decca executive who turned the Beatles to sign the Stones, first hit written by Lennon/McCartney, first manager was former employee of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, said manager encouraged them to write originals like Lennon/McCartney, etc.). Youâve probably heard these before, probably from the jerk ex! I would suggest you watch Gone With the Wind, but you will not get those 3 1/2 hours back and will resent me for it!

I'm a few years younger than you, so my life feels as if it's been inundated with Beatlemania. Some Beatles fans definitely take offense if someone doesn't like them. I couldn't care less if someone doesn't like the same music as me. đ¤ˇđťââď¸

Such as: 1. They were just a boy band (boy bands post-Beatles were inspired by the âA Hard Dayâs Nightâ template). 2. They were naive, druggy hippies. (âRun for Your Lifeâ, anyone?) 3. They were cultural appropriators of African American music (Were they the only white rock and roll band doing that?) 4. They were exalted by a music press that is cis-het white male dominated. (Is that 100% the bandâs fault?) 5. Just because the band is popular doesnât mean theyâre good. (See counterpoint #4.) 6. They were just popular among white teenager girls (They have had a wide fan base of people of all ages, races, and genders since the 1960s, as evidenced in the Get Back documentary).

I definitely went through my "discovering the Beatles" phase and still like them, but can definitely understand being over them as well. Certain songs I've heard so many times I want to gouge my ears out when I hear them again (sorry... Strawberry Fields).

Certain songs I've heard so many times I want to gouge my ears out when I hear them again (sorry... Strawberry Fields). It does get awkward when the Beatles are brought up in high school in the late 1990s. I had a pop culture obsessed history teacher who played both the Beatles (Liverpool)* and the Bee Gees (born in Manchester before emigrating to Australia) while discussing the Industrial Revolution. Or in Spanish class in which the tapes (obviously from the 1970s) saying â ÂĄMe encantan los Beatles!â, followed by the teacherâs clumsy explanation of who the Beatles were. Or my senior English textbook that called Great Britain the âhome of the Magna Carta, [William] Shakespeare, and the Beatlesâ. It certainly seems less cool to like the Beatles in that context, like discussing your love of Scott Joplin while your peers are bumping DMX. *He played âAll Love Need Is Loveâ, which does sound very hippie-dippy for cynical teenagers in the 1990s. I donât remember the Bee Gees song that he played. Has anyone seen the movie âYesterdayâ?
