One character I was sure was going to be an invisible character was Chandler's dad on Friends. I wonder if they intended him that way and then got lucky with the casting of Kathleen Turner?
Oh, and there was Ugly Naked Guy, but they showed him from the back in the last episode he was on, so I guess he doesn't really count.

Well, she wasn't entirely invisible, but Judy from Family Matters disappeared from the show without explanation. Come to think of it, so did Aunt Rachel and her son Richie.

Buffys Dad from BtVS? I think I recall seeing him once...maybe in a pilot episode or something, but he was MIA pretty much the whole time.

The nice thing is that they got a lot of mileage out of Hank Summer's absentee-ness. I forgot my Buffy lore, so I went to the interwebs - he did appear in a couple episodes, though - but a good chunk of those appearances were in the "let's go inside Buffy's mind" headtrip eps (in fact, he's a total dick in his first appearance, thanks to it being Nightmares coming true and all).

Some definite invisible characters from that show were Steve Urkel's parents. Urkel always talked about them, but they were never shown.

Another disappearing character was Richie Cunningham's older brother on Happy Days. I think they explained that away by having him go to college.

Thanks huntergrayson! Does Charlie Browns teacher count as an invisible character? I know she did plenty of 'Mwah mwah, mwah mwahmwah mwah' talking...Ive copied it for years when someone is boring me.

On Designing Women, we never saw Consuela, Suzanne's maid.

I have a weird feeling there was an Invisible Character in Murphy Brown... Murphys baby? Did we ever see the kid?

Degrassi's Heather Sinclair - I think we saw her hair once and it was all out of focus. According to Paige, she has an overbite, a bargain basement nose job, tragically overplucked eyebrows, and trashy roots. She also gave herself a haircut, runs around with dancing girls, auditioned for the role of announcer with a booger dangling from her nose hairs, had mono, likes fondue, and was crowned Prom Queen one year.
