I couldn't find a thread for Antiques Roadshow and wondered if there were any other Greecie fans of the show.
Mr. Grumpy and I got tickets to go to the filming in Baltimore in June and we're psyched!! I don't know what we'll take to have appraised (we can take two items each) but it should be FUN! I've wanted to do this for years.

I'm so excited for you Grumpy! I can't wait to hear all about it from you. The show is always so much fun to watch. I love the differences in attitude between the American show and the British show. You know, how 90% of the Brits say they'll never sell that 100k heirloom and you can see 40% of the American attendees mentally adding an addition to their home's.

Oh, I love Antiques Roadshow! Do you have a specific US one? The show that gets screened here is British. My favourite episode was one where this old guy took in his family dining table and not only was it appraised as being worth something like 18,000 pounds but the assessor also revealed a secret drawer in the table that generations of the owner's family had not known was there! Cool stuff.
Have fun Grumpy Girl!

I love this show! I'm always looking at DM when it's on and saying "we wouldn't happen to have one of those lying around, would we?"
2 items a piece? Sounds like a good opportunity to get the Overlords appraised. :-)

Haaa, I was wondering if they'd appraise the doxies!! Of course we'd have to say "Oh, we'd NEVER sell them!"
Mr. G was practising his deadpan "I see" when we're told that something is worth $100,000, like on the British Antiques Roadshow.
And yes, Yoss, there is an American version. It's an hour long and travels around the states to convention centers since we don't have any castles to host it like the UK version!
I'm SO excited. We've watched this show forever and I just love the appraisers. Squee! Mr. G has an old bakelite radio that he's going to take but what else to take... Squee!
My favorite piece was the Navajo blanket that was worth over $250,000 and the man didn't know it and he broke up a little because it was his mother's and she as just a poor farm girl. It was so touching and he seemed like such a nice man. Plus the appraiser was so adorable and excited.
And if we had some REALLY ugly pottery we'd take it because the ugliest stuff is usually the most valuable. You know, the Sotheby's appraiser is usually saying stuff like "Well, that vaas (they're only vases if they're cheap) that is so ugly that it makes your eyes bleed is Rookwood and worth $15,000."
And again, squee!

I like the smartass comments people sometimes make at the end of the US version.

I like the smartass comments people sometimes make at the end of the US version. I like when they paid a shitload of money for some priceless artifact only to discover that it was made in China two years ago to LOOK old and it's worth $30. Heh. Those are my favorite ones, the smug people smackdowns.

Heh, like the woman who had the silver candlesticks and she knew they were worth a lot of money. They weren't shiny though so she cleaned them with Windex. She was told that they would have been worth $1000, but since she took the patina off (with Windex!!) they were now worth only $100.

TiaMaria, that was the best!! It is the only reason I watch the show, to see the smug people have the not-so-antique rug pulled out from underneath them!
