I feel very guilty for writing this. Maybe it should go in the True Confessions thread, but... I hate "Amazing Grace". In any form. The first time I ever heard it (and I went to church growing up) was the Judy Collins version when I was in my twenties. I hate it. Instrumental, vocal, bagpipes, all of it. How did it (and the bagpipes, btw), get to be such a tradition? My sincere apologies in advance for those who get comfort from it.

My mother hates it too, pamster, so you're not alone. ;-)
I hate Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and always have.

I would guess that it's so popular because the melody and lyrics are very simple, and the hymn's theme is rather generic and non-denominational. I wonder if it gets a lot of traction because of its author. I don't mind it, but I don't love it. I think On Eagle's Wings is way worse, though.

I think On Eagle's Wings is way worse, though. Me too. I went to Catholic school and we had to learn that one, and nothing can make a person hate a song more than having to memorize it to sing it at Mass. Bette Midler's From a Distance got ruined for me the same way.

Amazing Grace has always kind of given me the creeps.

Another thing I don't like about Amazing Grace is that the standard/traditional version was "saved a wretch like me," which is kind of awesome in a Grimm's folktales way. But the boring Catholic version I learned was, "saved and set me free." Zzzzzzzz effin' zzzz.

Jason Derulo's song "Trumpets" drives me nuts. The lyrics are horrible and when the trumpets go I want to break my radio.
Is it weird your eyes remind me of a Coldplay song? Yes, yes it is. Is it weird that your bra remind me of a Katy Perry song? But that's weirder

Is it weird that your bra remind me of a Katy Perry song? But that's weirder I'm so torn about this song. I hate the lyrics, but I love the beat, especially the trumpets. If I could just listen to the song without the dumb lyrics.

I can live with the song itself, mostly, but the "mournful bagpipes" version is easily one of my top 10 most irritating musical cliches.

I can live with the song itself, mostly, but the "mournful bagpipes" version is easily one of my top 10 most irritating musical cliches. We had that at a family funeral a long time ago, and now when I hear it, it's not the "oh, pause for a sad recollection" moment, it's "do they know anything-- anything--else on the bagpipes?" Well, in the sense of "<checks watch> wow, I've never heard this before." I know it's ritually significant, but it's not the only song that exists to evoke a sense of the spiritual for people in mourning. Obvy, it's a YMMV thing, but to be 100% shallow, yesterday I watched the funeral procession of Nathan Cirillo and was really appreciative of all the beautiful bagpipe melodies I hadn't heard before, or even very often. "Flowers of the Forest" was simply beyond.
