Ditto that. I just really can't stand him and I think it's the no sense of humor that puts it over the edge.
I also agree with hal9000 on the "Looney Left." If you want to get your message heard, go to Washington, partner with someone legit and move forward from there. '60's syle protests are a dime a dozen these days and irrelevant. I'm sure the next thing we hear will be his whining at how the press didn't cover his little hunger strike.

See, even with pretention and hamminess, I still think Sean is an amazing actor and director. The Pledge was a great film and I will never fall out of love with Spicoli! I just wish he wasn't so earnest - earnest in a didactic "you are a moron if you don't agree with me" sense. You can be passionate and dedicated to various causes but you don't have to be an ass about it. I think Sean probably ends up alienating more people from his various projects than he wins over. I agree with most of his politics (except for his stance on abortion) so I'm generally inclined to support his endeavours but if I was sitting on the other side of the fence and some actor dude started shrilly lecturing me on the morality of war or the failings of the capitalist state I don't know that I'd take him seriously. Word, yossarian. I happen to disagree with some of his views, but even if I didn't, he goes about like a bull in a china shop and is an ass about it. For someone so talented and obviously intelligent, he's lacking in people-smarts. He's unbearably condescending and pretentious. And he's more than a little bit like his arch-enemy GWBush in that he seems to think that if you're not with his views, you're against him and his views (making you, of course, obviously a moron). Shut up, Sean. Or better, talk into a paper bag till you pass out from the carbon dioxide. The rolling hunger strike is one stupid farging idea. The list of participants is like a roll call of pretentious Artists with a capital A. Fasting for 24 hours and calling attention to it? Assholes. Why not mention your idea to all the people going hungry around the world who go without food for days regularly because they have no choice? Ass.Holes. The assholiest assholes in assholedom.

I have no problem with hunger strikes, and I don't think that they are disrespectful to those who are in poverty. But a rolling hunger strike? How half assed.

A rolling hunger strike totally defeats the purpose. The whole point is that you're supposed to be saying you're willing to die for your cause.
Apparently he's willing to be mildly uncomfortable for his cause. Asshat.
When? When?! Will famous people who (basically) share my political views learn how to not make asses of themselves?

See, I can understand the principle of Day Without: A day without driving to see how much we rely on our cars and gas/oil consumption, for instance. But a one-day-long hunger strike is, well, weird. It should more appropriately be called a fast.
I admire Sean's earnestness, I think his heart is in the right place, I do think he's a superb actor and director...but I also know that Robin (his wife) must be one of the longest-suffering women in Hollywood.

Considering most of these probably have food issues and have gone longer without eating to get into designer duds - is this "hunger strike" a real sacrifice.
Serioulsy though, I admire his convictions.

When he's onscreen, I can't get enough of him. Love love love him to bits.
Offscreen, I just want the man to STFU.
I agree that what they are doing is "A Day Without Sustenance" and not a hunger strike. To quote a line from Sean's own film "Taps" - "It's the wrong execution of the right idea."

Why does his "long suffering" wife stay with him? Because I have no sympathy for her. Grow a back bone.

How compelling. Except not.
Love Penn and Sarandon on screen. Offscreen they are asshats.
