Sounds like that scene from "Romancing the Stone." "Joan Wilder!?! THE Joan Wilder?" El Chapo was no doubt stoked that a famous actor came down to talk to him, Federales be dammed.
Sean gets to add to his resume' the fact that he singlehandedly smoked out a fugitive drug lord and law enforcement just had to swing by and scoop him up.
Kind of like he saved Haiti after the earthquake.

According to the story I just saw on msnbc, the in person interview took place in October. At that point in time, authorities were going to swoop in and get el Chapo, but delayed because they didn't want to risk hurting Penn. Because of the delay, el Chapo was alerted and able to escape.

I bet a lot of people are gonna steer clear of Sean Penn for a bit. Madonna would not be one of those people. She posted some pictures with him on Instagram.

I would have been okay with sacrificing Sean Penn for the greater good. Or for whatever.
I don't hope the cartel kills him or anything but I won't cry if they do. Dumbass. However, if his kids (or anyone else around him) get hurt because he interviewed El Chapo, then all bets are off.
I wouldn't want to have any part of that interview no matter how much El Chapo brought his capture in himself by wanting his life story made into a movie.
I wonder if Sean Penn has enough intelligence to be worried/scared. I doubt it.
Eta: Madonna is an idiot.

So, I wonder which parts of SP's oeuvre EC is most familiar with? Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
Part of me hopes El Chapo had Sean Penn confused with Matthew McConaughey and that he kept saying "Keep on livin', awright, awright, awright" and that Sean Penn smouldered but didn't correct him. Or, repeatedly tried to correct him, to no avail. I don't hope this to the point that Matthew McConaughey has to look over his shoulder, though.
Confession: I looked up both the spelling of "oeuvre" and "McConaughey" for this post. *hangs head*

Maybe old Sean will be safe in the burn unit.

I'm not too concerned about Sean Penn. He has enough money and influence to take care of himself. Mexican actress Kate de Castillo has a lot more reason to be worried.
The stupid cartel really brought this on themselves. What a soap opera!

I know you're snarking with the soap opera thing, but I'd watch the heck out of that if it were a storyline on Days or GH.
