Part of me thinks this is patriarchal bullshit. The smaller, other part of me thinks that this would be delicious fanfic.

ETA: I don't know the story about Leila and Vincent, either. I was under the impression Greta took the baby and then married her cousin, but the timeline is wrong.

According to this 1999 profile of Greta Scacchi, it sounds like Vincent was involved with Leila, at least when she was younger.

And in this interview, Scacchi says she left D'Onofrio twice before their wedding (I didn't think they married?) and then Vincent left her when the baby was young and their relationship was tempestuous. I will go on record and state I have had a long standing Vincent fixation, and I am also aware that although these bits only come up in interviews with Scacchi, that is part of entertainment journalism's inherent sexism. That said, in the full flowering of my biases, this sounds less like a full desertion and more like a relationship that perhaps thought having a baby would fix its problems.

Topic: Sean Frickin' Penn. I saw him in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and didn't think it was that bad, but I didn't get the movie, really. I kept thinking about how sad it was that Life magazine was resurrected only to die again.

I keep hearing rumors and speculation that Madonna never quite got over him, despite all the time that passed, all she has accomplished, and how much she suffered at this man's hands-literally. If that's true, I don't get it.

Reading all of this, I can't help but think Leila is trying to piss off her mother somehow by taking up with an American man. A loud mouthed asshole American at that.
