I was like, is that even legal!? so I started Googling, and come to find out, it's totes legal to marry your first cousin in my home state and about 20 others. (I don't know about in Australia.) That really surprised me, but on consideration, yeah, I guess I'd have to agree that the government should not deny rights to two consenting adults (who have the same grandparents).
On-topic: When I saw Sean Penn's thread bumped up, I was expecting him to be doing public statements or fundraising or something to support Haiti.

That really surprised me, but on consideration, yeah, I guess I'd have to agree that the government should not deny rights to two consenting adults (who have the same grandparents). First cousin marrying used to be really common. Greta has said that she and her cousin loved each other for a long time but wouldn't consider it because of the taboo, so they carried on unhappy relationships with other people. Finally, they realized they could not be happy without being together. So, you know, let them live their life and be happy. I think it was also the same interview where Greta said she'd done the research and there's no genetic reason not to have children with your first cousin. Which is probably true if it's an isolated occurrence on the family tree, but all proponents of incest use that line. I once read some article about a teenage girl in New Jersey who married her father and she was all "I've done the research!" so...

Possibly triggering:
There's also the cultural role--in many cultures where cousin marriage is normal or expected, it's not considered disruptive to the family unit. And the inverse is equally true: cultures in which cousin marriage would be considered disruptive or atypical it's frowned upon, illegal, actively discouraged, etc. It's not strictly a genetic issue, although in places where it's more common, you have more of a genetic risk because there's longer time period of genetic bottlenecking.
What are Sean Penn's kids with Robin Wright up to? Are they trust fund celeb kids? Rich kids of instagram? Living on a kibbutz planting melons? In college majoring in the dreary tedium of normalcy?

Dylan Penn models. I saw her in an ad in last month's Vogue. She's very beautiful but not in the same magnetic way as her mother.

My fiancé's parent are first cousins (from Lebanon), so I guess I can't really side-eye anyone for that.

Mr. 76's grandparents were first cousins. I was kind of aghast when he told me, and he got offended at my aghast-ness. I had just never heard of auch a thing.
Topic? Fug.

Now I'm wondering if any of marriages in my family are first cousins. I'll have to ask my mom.
As for Sean Penn, I wonder what his tricks are for wooing the ladies? He seems to have no issues despite his relationship history...he's good at something.

Cousin marriage in modern times usually happens when a few factors are involved: ethnic lineage is important, especially when it's a really small minority; if it's a very small village and there are few options; when marriage is seen as a transaction to build wealth or alliances, or some other strategic decision. To my knowledge there are no cousin marriages in my family in recent times because my people were of major ethnic groups and religions, and tended to live in cities.
Sean Penn: gah, still not much.

He seems to have no issues despite his relationship history...he's good at something. It's no trick. He's the bad boy with the heart of gold and deep pockets who acts like a shithead and then redeems himself over and over again until it's finally over. The only thing he's good at is being a cliche.

Mr. 76 used the small village defense, and said they didn't know anyone else. Except....they are from Queens, and it was the 1940s, soooooo... *shrug*
