I didn't think anyone could surpass Jeff Buckley's cover of "Hallelujah," but DAMN. k.d. lang's version is incredible. Go here[/color] and click on "Web Extra: lang sings Cohen for NPR." Or listen to her entire Carnegie Hall concert on the same page. The woman is incredible. k.d., I'll have sex with you just because of that voice, and I'm a straight woman.

Hearing her sing "Crying" live is easily one of the best things I've ever heard anyone sing, EVER! She rips your fucking guts out.

I think Martina McBride's voice is flawless. She gives me chills sometimes. And even though Mary J. Blige doesn't have the best voice technically there's just so much raw emotion there. You just feel her every time she sings. Sometimes you need that more than a technical perfect voice.

Just coming here to post this. Her voice gives me the chills.
It's a shame that cancer claimed her life.

You all have posted some really great!!!! voices. One that I really miss is Allison Moyet (singer for Yaz)
I wish I knew what happened to her, because her voice was amazing.
I will be checking out some of you guys' other picks, because I agree with the ones that I know.

Word on the Jeff Buckley love, but don't forget Tim.
I still remember how I first heard of Tim Buckley. Beatles nut that I am, I had gotten Linda McCartney's book Sixties, which has a bunch of photos she took of stars in the Sixties back when she was Linda Eastman, pre-Paul. Anyway, I was flipping though it and there was this gorgeous photo of a young man with curly hair and amazing eyes. He was sitting on the ground in Central Park and looking up at the camera, and he was just captivating. It was Tim Buckley. (They had been involved briefly, but she was scared by his drug habit.)
Anyway, in the caption to the Tim Buckley photo Linda wrote that she was told the Central Park photo of Tim was his son, Jeff's, favorite photo. Around that time, Paul McCartney also started pimping Jeff Buckley in his interviews and attended his shows in New York, so I was like, "Who's this Jeff guy?" And I heard Grace when it was released and was like, "Damn." He was an even better singer than Tim, and had such a pure, angelic voice.
(And as I got to become a big McCartney fan I learned there was even more freaky mojo stuff going on between the Buckleys and Linda which I found very fascinating.)
