I'm surprised that there is no thread for this yet. I am going to start off with Jeff Buckley. I thought I had fully appreciated and loved his amazing voice, and then recently I listened to "The Other Woman" from the Grace Legacy edition CD, and when he sings "the other woman will spend her life alone" at the end, I get chills and have to play it again simply for the beauty and pureness of his voice. I could go on a bit, but hopefully you all understand, and if not, then you must listen to "Lover, You Should've Come Over". Any other nominees?

I don't know if I could ever come up with an absolute favorite, but I'll put forth... Nina Simone. If I'm doing my house-cleaning, or whatever, and put on a CD for background noise, she's a bad choice -- because I'll sit down, close my eyes and just listen. I don't get anything done till the CD's finished.

I love Joni Mitchell's voice. It may not be perfect, but it carries a lot of emotion. Blue is one of my favorite cds.

Neko Case. After being blown away by her recordings, I saw her live, and 'the voice' is even more amazing. She comes at you with such power on some songs on her albums, I assumed it was in part studio wizardry. Nuh-uh! Pure. Case. *taps chest*
She has this beautiful soft voice, well showcased in "Porchlight" from Furnace Room Lullaby, and then she can totally let 'er rip on "Loretta" from The Tigers Have Spoken. And when she sang "Furnace Room Lullaby" live, with no instruments, I couldn't believe how amazing she sounded. If you've never heard her, go listen RIGHT NOW.
Also, I never realised how awesome a singer Jeff Buckley was until I tried to sing along. I can usually keep up, a bit, with most of the albums I own, but Jeff had vocal technique like I couldn't believe. And the quality of his voice.... *sigh*

I know he might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I nominate Rufus Wainwright. He just breaks your heart.
