I'm so happy there are others who love DM as much as I do. Some people don't think they are popular anymore and are just an 80's band. Who are these vile, demented people, CAGirl? How DARE they attack the Divine DM?!! I will order His Royal Fangness to rip them into fajita meat, if not subatomic particles. <sniff> (And if you've seen my avatar, you know those teeth can do serious damage if ordered to do so!) New Order *and* Moby. I'm actually turning a little green. I love Moby. His "Extreme Ways" is probably the song which best describes my life and which means the world to me. But his music is amazing in general. Just out of curiosity you guys, where would you put Moby & Evanescence on the scale of things re NW? Starskin, I'll ask my best friend about any books which he may know on the subject. In his youth, in the 70s, he used to be the lead singer in a punk-rock group which came very close to breaking out nationally and which received a LOT of press as a whole at the time. He knows almost everything there seems to be about certain eras and (quite seriously) almost every genre of music out there. He's like a walking encyclopedia. In fact, he has written about punk rock in numerous music journals and mags, and has tons of books on rock, punk, blues and other genres. I'll see if he knows anything re NW. He listens and likes a lot of NW bands, Joy Division in particular, so I'll see what he can come up with.

New Order makes me happy. That's all the commentary I have, sorry. But no, their music really does make me feel happy. Does anybody have their "Singles" CD, and if so, is it worth checking out?

You might want to try contacting NME—they bougth MM back in 2000. (*sniff* RIP, Melody Maker). As a scholar, they might give you access to their own archives. Barring that, I think academic insitutions should have back issues either on microfiche or, maybe even electronically these days. (It's been a long time since I was in a college library obviously!)
And in honor of Dwan's birthday, I offer up Altered Images's "Happy Birthday" and "I Could Be Happy" as more testaments to the awesomeness of new wave!

That's a good idea LEB. That's kind of a scary order---trying to get a major magazine to pay attention to me----- but it would be awesome if I somehow got access to their archives. I doubt I'd ever leave.
And Kafka, I am thouroughly enjoying the music you sent me. I have to say that I think SoM walks a very fine line between NW and Goth. There's a lot of elements of both in their music...and the lead singer sounds more than a touch like Peter Murphy, the OG of Goth. Yet another example of the blending of genres!
What about current NW or post punks? Who, in your opinion, is at the forefront of the new New Wave (Second Wave?) movement? I'm not really familiar enough with Evanescence to comment, because something about the lead singer's voice bugs. She's got a lovely voice, but it's sounds so overproduced and slick that I can't enjoy it. Moby blends a ton of elements in his music: Techno, House, New Wave, even World and New Age, so I'm not sure where he fits on the spectrum. I do have to say that "That's When I Reach For MY Revolver" is one of my favorite freak out songs, though.

This thread is a lot of fun to read. It makes me want to download some stuff that I still only have on (gasp!) cassette tape. Fav DM songs: Shake the Disease, Question of Time, Personal Jesus OMD trivia: Tesla Girls was playing when I got my first speeding ticket. The chorus goes "No! No!" and my sister and I see the swirling lights I read what was up of this thread earlier today and then somehow ended up with Love & Rockets' "Ball of Confusion" in my head all day, which was OK.

RE: New Order. I don't know about a "Singles" album, but "Substance" is outstanding, as is "best of New Order." I got "best of" first, and moved onto "Substance." I actually prefer the '88 version of "Blue Monday."
I'd say the most excellent NO albums are "Power, Corruption and Lies," "Technique," and "Low-Life."

Another fan of Substance here. If you like Joy Division/New Order and don't have this album, you should get it!
Is She Wants Revenge the band that sounds like they resurrected Ian Curtis and made him write mediocre lyrics? Because that dude sounds exactly like him, which I'll admit made me excited, but the lyrics to the single (the one where he sings 'I wanna f*cking tear you apart') are just---meh.

She Wants Revenge sounds EXACTLY like Interpol and they both have singers who sound like Ian Curtis. I like Interpol and the first time I heard She Wants Revenge I had to make sure I hadn't put an Interpol CD on by mistake. An inferior Interpol CD, that is.

II think my favorite Duran Duran song is actually "Electric Barbarella". I know it's probably not as popular as "Hungry Like the Wolf" and the like, but I loooove that song. Electric Barbarella was what got me into Duran Duran. I had always liked them, but never really paid attention. When they released the song in 1997, I couldn't help to love them. "Out of My Mind" (from the Saint soundtrack) is my top five favorite of Duran Duran songs. They meshed really well with the electro trend then.
