I didn't realize that riders compete as a package deal with their horse. For some reason, I assumed in cases like this that she could just compete on a different horse. I like the idea that the horse qualifies as a competitor too, and I'm glad his health is put before Olympic ambitions.

Yeah I didn't realize that either until I heard this story. I assumed if there was a problem with the horse then you could use a "spare" but it makes sense that if you train with a specific horse then it's hard to just substitute at the last minute.

Zara is also engaged. I wonder if they decided to do this now because less attention will be be given them because of William's engagement/wedding.

Wouldn't surprise me at all -- they've been engaged (and living together) for quite some time, and Zara is completely unpretentious, from what I can see in the equestrian media.

I have a feeling Zara and Mike could wind up having the Queen give her concent for them to marry and then slip away for a weekend and do it, just them parents and siblings.

They have been living together, but according to media reports, he just proposed a couple of nights ago. Of course, that may be their story... they knew William's engagement was coming and so they waited. I agree with NappingAthena, they will probably get married very quietly, perhaps even secretly, no muss/no fuss, no pictures sold to "Hello."

I've never paid much attention to her, or any of the other Royals, but I googled a few photos after coming across reports of her engagement, and I have to say, she is absolutely gorgeous, wonky teeth and all. On looks alone I'd take her over any actress currently working in Hollywood. Gorgeous. And I'm not especially swayed by blondes.

She looks just like my SIL. It's freaky.

Does she actually need the Queen's permission to get married? I thought that Anne renounced titles and the line of sucession for her kids.

Yes she needs permission to marry if she wants to stay in the line of sucession. Because titles go through the male line only, in order for Anne's children to have titles her husband would have needed one. He didn't have one by birth and they refused one at the marriage (for the record, they're not the first, the husband of the Queen's cousin Princess Alexandra did as well). However you end up in the line of succession at birth automatically, until the moment you leave either for becoming Catholic or marrying without permission. An example would be that several of the Kent family are Catholic, but children at birth are still in the line until they are confirmed in the faith.
