I understand the new code is supposed to be a more fair system, but I think it has completely eliminated the grace, power, finesse artistic gymnastic used to have. Case in point Lilia Podkopayeva 1996 Olympic Team Compulsories, my favorite gymnast of all time. She was the last of her kind to possess the power, grace, musicality, and presentation. Hopefully, the kinks will be worked out of the new system, and maybe I hope they bring back the compulsories. Then we can really separate the good from the great. And just because I like to pimp Lilia out like that, here she is when she was 9, and she had it even then.

That was fucking beautiful, I think I teared up. It is amazing how both figure skating and gymnastics are being ruined for the sake of fairness and in an attempt to eliminate the subjective aspect of the sports. They need to bring by compulsories in gymnastics and figures in figure skating. I hate what is happening to both sports.
Lilia just rocked!!!!!! She was last Olympic AA champ that really earned and deserved the title if you ask me. 2000 was just a mess and I was one of the few who thought that Khorkina should have won over Patterson, who I hate.

Lilia was definitely one of the best there ever was. I know some people like to compare her to Shannon Miller, but there was never any comparison. Lilia was the best, and should have won the gold on beam (even though she had that slight balance check), her form was much better than Miller's. I liked Khorkina as well. She was a fabulous bitch. But I thought in her later years, she was just phoning it in, and had sloppy form. She could without a doubt outshine Patterson though, and that alone she deserved the gold. She really should have won the Olympics in Australia (what year was that?). Those officials completely screwed her with the jacked up vault (which messed up a whole slew of gymnasts that night). And then by the time she got to the bars, her show event, she had given up and fell. They would have let her redo her vault, but the damage was already done. I'm still pissed about that.

I don't get the new scoring system at all I can explain it! In as much detail as you'd like. Does anyone have any specific questions about the new scoring, or should I just give a basic rundown on it? A basic rundown to start would be great, SwanFlake, thank you!

It was the 2000 Olympics. I still remember the terrified looks on the Russian gymnastics team as Queen Sveta threw a fit/tantrum, and they were all sort of cowering from her wrath. It amused me to no end I like her and her bitch-diva attitude, but would probably hate her in real life.

Did you guys know Dominique Moceanu is pregnant? I'm kind of freaked out because I still remember her as a little pixie; you know, before she, in the indelible words of Khorkina, "ran towards the fat" and divorced her parents.

I knew she had gotten married, but not pregnant. Congrats to her. I wonder if she's reconciled with her father.

She's reconciled with her father. I hate Dominque Moceanu. She tried to make a comeback in 2005 and claimed that she deserved to be at 2006 Nationals but that there was all this corruption to keep her out, which wasn't the least bit true. She didn't come anywhere close to qualifying. She and her coach/fiancee had this telephone conference with USA Gymnastics to plead her case, and people got to call in and listen, so I called in and got to hear everything that was said. Domi and her husband were totally wrong and the people speaking on behalf of the USAG women's program were totally right. Once that became clear she then just tried to say that it'd be good PR to have an Olympic champion there. Not if she had no hope of finishing any higher than last place. She only trained to compete two events.
Our sport has had too many scandals and too many negative misconceptions floating around. I take it really seriously that someone such as herself would potentially contribute to that by crying corruption where there was none all for her own selfish benefit.
I'll try to get arond to the Code of Points explanation tomorrow.

Didn't know that. I never thought she would be able to make a comeback especially with all the personal problems she had, but I always felt that USAG would make an exception for her. She always seemed to be their golden child.
But her gymnastics was nothing spectacular.
