The alternates are Jana Bieger, Ivana Hong and Corrie Lothrop.
The men went through an informal selection camp to verify their routines. They didn't have an actual selection camp just because they chose not to. Marta wants a selection camp to find the person who is the most consistent and has a higher scoring potential. There were too many bubble girls to just pick a team outright; with that said, there was only ever really one open spot on this team and it want to Bridget Sloan. I'm very happy with this team considering the circumstances. Shayla and Mattie is injured; Mattie will be back next year as she was really gunning for London 2012 anyway. Shayla is off to NCAA. And I hope Jana is just gone.

It will be an interesting Olympics to say the least. Although the Europeans are not what they once were, there are still a lot of dark horses around.

Wow, there's a gymnastics thread here? I haven't really followed the sport in a long time but did catch some of the Olympic trials. I too was surprised that no one knows how to dance anymore.
Thanks for the clip of Mattie Lawson. She was the one girl I remembered who had dancing ability. I heard on the clip that she's from Los Angeles. Does anyone know what club/coach she trains with?
I saw talk about the Rybacki's a few pages back. Beth and my sister were teammates and members of the ill fated 1980 Olympic team. It was great to see her have all that success in coaching. My sister got completely out of the sport.

They just need to be like the men and do it sans music.

Sunday's women's qualifying round was pretty rough for the USA.
I'm not familiar with Olympic rules, but I know there are three alternates on the team - why couldn't they be used after Samantha Peszek injured her ankle? Or was there not enough time?
Also, you will never convince me that some of those Chinese girls are even close to 16 yrs of age.

I think they're waiting to see if Peszek will be able to compete Tuesday. She landed her dismount off the bars with no problem, so I think they're hoping the ankle will get better for the team finals.
I think it's pretty much a proven fact that He Kexin is 14, but since no other countries filed an official complaint with the FIG, she gets to compete.

I just saw the women's coverage this morning, and it sounded like she had injured her ankle right after the warmup, right before the competition started. I feel bad for her--to qualify for the team and come all this way, and then get injured before she even has a chance to compete? That sucks. At least she was able to compete on bars.
NBC's coverage is absolutely terrible! They've always been bad about showing only the Americans and ignoring the rest of the athletes, but if I didn't know any better, I'd have thought from their broadcast that the only countries competing in gymnastics were the US and China.
