Bonsai, are you talking about Savage Love by Dan Savage? I don't know if it's still in the onion, but it's in Seattle's weekly The Stranger.

Dan Savage is in the A.V. Club section of The Onion now. You can find him online at the bottom of their main page.

Chonies and Knessa -- Yes, that's the guy! Although I sometimes would feel squeamish at some of the subject matter that came up, I had to admit that his advice was always spot on.

I think Savage has a tendency to either trivialize something important or else overreact in a big way. The latest was just last week. At least he will usually admit when he's wrong.

Oy. That column last week was so aggravating. I'm so glad he admitted he botched that one but still, the glimpses of misogyny that occasionally peek out are somewhat annoying.

The guy's annoying. He was refreshing when he started out years ago, but his antics are just aggravating now. He should have stuck to the more colloquial, personal tone of Mistress Matisse.

I find Savage hit or miss. Sometimes he's funny and on point; othertimes it's all overshare and grossout factor, with very little advice to be found.

And then there's the other times where he either uses the question as a launching point or he ignores the question altogether to get on his soapbox about something. And while it is refreshingly honest that he admits to often writing his column while drunk or otherwise intoxicated, the only other person I've known to admit to that was one of my history professors in college. And he was an ass too.

I think the best advice column ever was Sassy magazine's "Dear Boy" column. Every month they'd get a different male celebrity to answer questions from readers. Does anyone remember this? Once a girl wrote in saying her best friend was gorgeous and got all the attention and asked what to do about it. That month's celeb (I think it was Dean Ween) replied, "I honestly have no idea." That was it, that was the whole reply. Another time a girl said her friends told her she couldn't go to their parties unless she had a boyfriend. That month's celeb suggested, "Go to the party alone, and leave with someone else's boyfriend."
Terrible advice, but very fun to read.

Oh, Sassy. I loved that magazine. A shame that its editors all went on to be very annoying fashion writers.
