Update! The update answers a lot of the questions posed in the comments. And the prankee has gone seriously quiet and I hope is working with her lawyers to hand the company a massive lawsuit.

OMG They work in HR! If HR is this bad, I can't imagine what the rest of the company is like. Apparently just as bad, since the "pranksters" only got a slap on the wrist. They deserve to get sued.

That whole prank is horrific, but I have to admit I laughed that there was apparently one coworker out on vacation while all this went down. I just imagine the "Don Glover walking in and everything's on fire" Community gif when I think about the shitstorm that person returned to.

Hello, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress. Also, impersonating an LEO is a criminal offense. Wow, that is bad.

Yeah, that was the cherry on top of the "what the bloody hell were they thinking" sundae. Also, impersonating an LEO is a criminal offense. According to the update, the fake police officer was pointed out through a window, wasn't wearing a uniform, didn't enter the building, and didn't speak to the prankee. So there's no legal option there. I still hope the prankee is preparing a huge lawsuit on other grounds. Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress is a good place to start.

I still see at least a conspiracy charge, even with the update. There was an agreement, and substantial act in furtherance of the agreement. Whether the conduct rises to the level of any criminal charge, it’s still appalling! Who does this stuff?

Kind of off-topic, but Mallory Ortberg has come out as trans, with a new name and pronoun preference. Link to LitHub. My own question: could someone tip me off on the correct language if I've stumbled? I know a little about deadnaming but not as much as I should. eta: Here's another article. " Mallory Is Not Gone." Most of the articles are about Ortberg's novels and general writing career, not about Dear Prudence.

I know very little about this subject and I'm sure Daniel will be able to write about it with great skill and humor. I am especially interested in Daniel's family's response. I believe they are pretty conservative Christians. (But educated and kind Christians, not Trump Christians).

I love that he's talking about transitioning as a positive and exciting development in his life. That is not to discount the pain he or other transpeople might experience, but it's good to flip the script sometimes and give people a peek at the other side of the coin.

As Chonies said, tip us off if we're stumbling. Better to look stupid, and be willing to learn, then just proceed forward like I know everything.
