Didn't Jacob imprint on Renesmee to save her? They said it was wolf law that they can't harm someone whose been imprinted on by another wolf and up until he did that, they were planning to kill her because she was outside the vampire/wolf treaty or something, being a vamp/human hybrid. I haven't read the book so maybe it was presented differently, but that's the impression I got from the movie. That is what they said in the movie; I think it is in the book (but I'm not reading Breaking Dawn again to check) that that's another bonus of Jacob imprinting on Renesmee, but he definitely doesn't choose to imprint on her to save her. That would actually have been a better way of doing it; to make it a sacrifice on Jacob's part, but as it happens: He wants to kill Renesmee, sees her, imprints, so all the problems are solved. He won't kill her, the wolves won't because they don't mess with other wolves' imprints and Bella doesn't have to worry about Jacob being broken-hearted over her. Because everybody's always totally OK with the exes hooking up with their daughter.

SELFISH! Isn't the imprinting thing understood that someday when the child is older, they will marry...? I mean, if it was like "I will be your protective godfather-like person" it would be problematic, but adding romance to it is just...

I mean, if it was like "I will be your protective godfather-like person" it would be problematic, but adding romance to it is just... Yeah, I can't even remember how they explained it in the book, because I kind of just skimmed it. But I saw BD last night (sigh) and when Jacob "imprinted" on Renesmee (lolololol, the name still kills me), he did a voice over while they showed Renesmee going from a little girl to a teenager. He said nothing about love-love. I think the director was trying to make it less squicky or something. Jacob's lines were something like "their brother, protector," etc. I may have been a little sauced while watching BD last night, but I didn't get the impression that Jacob imprinted on the baby to save her. I thought it was just an unwilling wolf thing.

Wolves have no choice on the imprinting thing. The movie skated over this due to squick factor, but Renesmee is Jacob's soulmate foreverrrrrrr. If she doesn't want to be with him romantically (but of COURSE she will!!!111), he will be her protector/bestie/butler/whatever she requires, but she's IT for him. Also, basically the reason he was so into Bella the whole time was because he was drawn to the undeveloped ovum that became Renesmee. Odd, then, that SMeyer never attributed that same attraction to the geriatric sperm in Edward that ALSO became Renesmee, isn't it? Then again, logic is not one of her strong suits.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, GUYS!

I haven't read the books but am thoroughly familiar with them through Cleolinda's detailed recaps and Jacob imprinting to save Reneesmee is so not how it is represented there. The canon is that we're TOLD the wolf can be whatever (protector, brother, etc) for the imprintee but I believe that all the imprintee/imprinter relationships actually SHOWN are romantic.

You are not alone, my friend! The last 20 posts in this thread have only confirmed to me how horrible, derivative, and poorly plotted this entire series is.

I don't think it was ever explained what would happen if the imprintee didn't look at the wolf romantically. I think they only refer to the brother/protector thing because another in the pack imprints on a damn toddler. So they have to justify why the wolf wanted to spend time with the imprintee while she was just a damn kid in diapers.

Cleolinda's recaps of the books were my introduction to the series, as well! Darn her! She coined the ever-so-true phrase, "Twilight means never having to say you're kidding."

If I recall correctly, VampBella beats the shit out of Jacob when she finds out he imprinted on Renesmee, so she thinks it's squicky too.
What happens if/when the imprintee dies? Does the wolf get released from the imprint, or does he just pine away forever?

The imprinting thing seems copped from Dragons of Pern author Anne McCafferty (who passed away in Ireland a few days ago) with a side trip through Mercedes Lackey Herald-Mage territory.
