When U2 first met Bob Dylan, he advised them to embrace Irish traditional music. Makes me wonder how that would have turned out.

Honestly, the idea of of U2 playing trad makes me cringe. I used to be a huge HUGE fan and read everything I could about them, and off the top, none of them had any background in traditional music. I think Edge and Adam had some classical training, but U2 was pop-rock from the beginning, ca. 1977. I think Thin Lizzy’s Whiskey In The Jar worked so well because it was an outlier and the rest of their stuff was straight rock.
When did Dylan meet U2, anyway? If it’s when I guess it was, embracing traditional would have been a big shift.
I don’t know why this provoked such a strong reaction. Love Sinéad, hope she’s well and healthy.

Everything I know about U2 I have learned from the excellent U Talkin’ U2 To Me podcast, so I assume this went on during Rattle & Hum times.

I would suspect that Dylan was thinking of his own interest in traditional American music and how it informed his own music when he gave U2 that advice. I’m glad U2 forged ahead with rock and didn’t turn into the Chieftans-lite.
And hooray fot Sinéad still being with us. Maybe she’ll be like Keith Richards and Iggy Pop and outlive us all.

Sadly, one of Sinead's fellow Irish musical icons has passed: The Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan dead at 46I am soooo sad. The Cranberries' music (and Dolores's unmistakable voice) was a huge part of my formative years. Mods: I apologize for the off-topic aside. There is no Dolores O'Riordan thread (which I understand since she was not the kind of celebrity that was constantly present in the media and on tabloids or whatnot), so I figured that this would be the appropriate thread to just mention it. I wonder if Sinead and Dolores ever sang together and I wonder what Sinead though of the late Cranberries lead singer. O'Riordan always seemed to me like a very "Sinead-esque" vocalist and overall pop star...

Sinead has made an appearance at Shane MacGowans 60th birthday gala at National Concert Hall Dublin to a great ovation #Shane60 Also songs dedicated to Dolores. I'd say it a very raucous bittersweet night.

Who thought Shane MacGowan would outlive Dolores Riordan? RIP Ms. Riordan, and peace to her family.
