I'm only 18 and didn't grow up in the times of The Cosby Show,Jello commercials, and Fat Albert (though I do love reruns of A Different World). So could someone please explain all the hostility towards Bill Cosby.

I loathe him because of an incident when I met him, but I assume most people can't stand the fact that he's made a second career out of preaching to Black folks in a very holier-than-thou way.

During the 80s presented himself as the ideal American Dream. Perfect family, perfect life, educated up the wazoo -- and funny to boot. He was always a bit preachy but that was okay because it seemed he was living what he preached. Then The Cosby Show ended and began seriously dissing* the African American community, basically for not following what he perceived was the right moral/life guidelines. Guidelines he'd spent his career/life pushing down other's throats.

Now it seems that he cheated on his wife and had a love child, and was a creepy ass who used his position of power to sexually abuse women.

He set himself up as the arbiter of American values and couldn't follow even the most basic values himself. He is scum.

That's why people hate him so much.

*Also, not sure where to look for it, it was on the old boards but there was a really insulting speech he gave awhile ago at a graduation (I think) about what was wrong with the African American community.

I think that he was a genuine talent that went awry when he got his higher degree. Not to slam the good hard-working people who get higher degrees, but Cosby was a good actor in 'I Spy' and very effective to boot. Then he got his educational degree, did 'Fat Albert,' and went right into freaking smug mode. While he was good on his show (which history has shown to be more heavy on the saccharine than even I realized), the show didn't hide that it was portraying a 'perfect family' who did not exist in any sort of reality that anybody lives in.

So where this hostility comes in is because the Cosby Show is pretty much the '80s version of those filmstrips seen in classrooms that reinforced the myth of the nuclear family. For eight years Cosby showed us how life should be and now it turns out that it was a very big lie. And since he can't follow his own ethical standards, all this moralizing on his part looks a lot like--excuse the terminology--the pot calling the kettle black.

And honestly, if ten women are going after him? I think any moralizing he wants to do is going to be taken with grain of salt or with his ass on a street corner preaching to the pigeons.

That might be backwards. I know he did either his Master's or his Ph.D. dissertation on "Fat Albert". I shit you not.

I can't even watch TCS nowdays - it's so outdated and for the most part, unfunny. And anything with that little brat Olivia? No way.

Oh yeah, I forgot about his little cheat around to get his degree in the form of creating what he was making his dissertation on. I would say Masters as he's a bigger fan of getting those phony Ph.Ds from every college he speaks at.

And I hear you about the Show, it's just pure awful today. The acting is wooden, the plots are pure dumb--is it really a tragedy if the daughters don't get fucking degrees? Is it really that indicative of a good job?--and the preaching is really obvious now. No wonder the Simpsons kicked its ass horribly: it at least treats its audience with more respect then to shovel crap at them.

And who is this long suffering Camille who has been clinging onto him and covering up all the shit. Or maybe she just wanted the money to keep rolling in and she did not care who he date raped or slept with "willingly" in the process. Just as long as they were still "rich". Who knows.
