Incident concerning actress Natasha Richardson

MONT-TREMBLANT, QC, March 17 /CNW Telbec/ - Yesterday, March 16, actress
Natasha Richardson fell in a beginners trail while taking a ski lesson at
Station Mont Tremblant.

She was accompanied by an experienced ski instructor who immediately
called the ski patrol. She did not show any visible sign of injury but the ski
patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the
slope and insisted she should see a doctor.

As an additional precautionary measure, the ski instructor as well as the
ski patrol accompanied Mrs Richardson to her hotel. They again recommended she
should be seen by a doctor. The ski instructor stayed with her at her hotel.
Approximately an hour after the incident Mrs. Richardson was not feeling good.
An ambulance was called and Mrs. Richardson was brought to the Centre
Hospitalier Laurentien in Ste-Agathe and was later transferred to Hôpital du
Sacre-Coeur.

Damn, I hope she makes it. Aren't head injuries exponentially worse when they're not treated immediately?

Yes, because the brain may swell or blood may collect against the brain, causing damage or death. My dad died of this kind of injury while in the hospital for cancer treatment -- he was disoriented, thought he heard my mother calling in the night, got out of bed, and fell and hit his head. The impact caused a subdural hemorrhage -- first he was confused, and then, as time wore on, he lost consciousness and finally stopped breathing. The accident happened at 3:30 a.m.; he was dead 26 hours later. The neurologist on call told us that he would likely not survive surgery in his weakened state and would need ventilation if he did, but Dad had vehemently stated that he did not want to be on a ventilator, so it was the end for him. I sincerely hope that because Natasha got quick medical care the odds will be tipped in her favor.

Gosh, I hope the news of her death is not true. This is just awful. On a beginner's slope, with her children, laughing off the fall and initially thinking it was nothing?

Awful news. I hope they start making helmuts mandatory. My kids aren't allowed on the slopes without one.
