Borrowed the set from my sis in law and have been reading about one a day ( they are like crack laced potato chips- I can't stop but they are so bad for me). I can't believe how juvenile the writing is!!!! The Sookie/Eric shower scene just before they consummate their lust..."Yikes. Yahoo. Yum." makes the petulant melodrama of Twilight seem down right sophisticated.

makes the petulant melodrama of Twilight seem down right sophisticated. I wouldn't go that far -- unlike Twilight, these books have plots! And definitely a slightly more healthy approach to relationships and sex. I agree though, a lot of the time, they read like bad romance novels to me. But I think I've become quite attached to the characters, so I'm at the point where I don't even notice anymore. They make good summer/beach books.

I've just started reading the books (I'm on #6), and TTMR & I have got the first two discs from season 1 from Netflix. I'm almost embarrassed at how much I'm enjoying them. Lady, you should be! The syntax is horrid. HORRID! I am ashamed of you on behalf of your profession.

I just read this, and for some reason, it cracks me the hell up. Oh, Charlaine.
Just read book 4, and I implore the powers that be at True Blood, please, oh please, you must incorporate this storyline. Love and kisses, Shanmac.
TVBill annoys me, but I despise BookBill to no end. BookEric (even when not suffering from amnesia) is so much fun.
I agree that some of the writing (especially the love scenes) is juvenile, but it's fun. I had a hell of a day yesterday, and it was nice fluff to take my mind off of it. But yeah, what the hell is Sookie wearing half the time (I hate TVSookie's clothes, too)? I love how in book 4, Eric, even when not "himself," hates her ugly coat and then, at the end, after he gets his memory back , is smug about her having to throw it away.

I love that bit about the coat.
I'm wondering how the show is going to address Sookie's other relationships with males. I am wondering who they'll cast for the hunky weres. Also on the show she really really hates Eric. In the books, she at least could recognize he was attractive. On the show, she's all, "Ew. He's gross!" And what about the big reveal on the show about shape shifters, when Sam tells Andy and Jason?? It's fun to see how diff. the show is.

Speaking of clothes, does no one remember the lace-up jeans and belly t-shirt she wore right before she was attacked by the maenad in book 2? That outfit will never surpass the hooker tomato dress of book 3 but each time I've read the description (I've read the series twice now), I always stop and go, WTF? Really, Charlaine?

I used to have a pair of lace-up jeans. God damn, they were ugly.

But it was her BRITNEY SPEARS outfit! (Harris's references to Britney Spears crack me up. She has another one where Sookie makes a "just call me Britney" crack about her brief [fake] engagement...but then instead of just letting it go by she has to wedge in a clarification that Britney was a pop star who once had a 55-hour marriage. Like, if you don't have enough faith in your pop culture references, don't put them in there.) But weird as it was, I was actually just kind of relieved that she was wearing JEANS for once instead of yellow slacks or a dress with a slip.
I was also WTFed again after the maenad attack, when Pam gives her a new pair of bikini panties to wear and Sookie is embarrassed by how tiny they supposedly are. And then she apparently goes to buy her first ever OMG thong for her trip with Bill. And I know she's supposed to be a nice churchy girl, but really, what kind of underwear had she been wearing all this time? Plus, we're repeatedly told how much Sookie likes to remove all her body hair and tan outside in little bikinis, so it's not like she's embarrassed by the whole idea of her crotch or something.

Marching Penguin, technically they weren't denim. Here's the description, which made me laugh, yet again: Where did she wear the yellow slacks again? Was it to Hayleigh's bridal shower? And she sure got over her aversion to skimpy underwear because she starts describing what bra & panties she wears in later books. I seem to remember something about a new set she wore that was blue or something and she was sure glad it wasn't ruined after yet another scrape she got into because she had just bought the set recently and it was the first time she was wearing it!

After hearing so much about True Blood (still haven't watched it), and lurking in this thread, I finally read Dead Until Dark and found I really enjoyed it. It's not the best written book ever obviously, but the writing didn't annoy me and the world (with vampires being real and "official") was interesting and so were many of the characters. I rolled my eyes at some parts (Sookie's detailed clothing descriptions being one thing!), but found it an easy-going, light read. One thing: why can't vampires shave or otherwise seemingly change their looks once they've turned vampire? I mean, it seems like their hair would just be hair and could be cut or shaved, though maybe it wouldn't grow back. Does Harris ever explain that further? I guess I just felt kind of sorry for Bill and his sideburns.
