Sometimes I don't know why I bother to keep going back over there. Well, I kind of know why. Most of the shows I love aren't shows my friends watch, so I (at least used to) go over there to read some good discussions. Problem is, the characters I like are usually the ones that end up being hated. Sometimes, there'll be one or two people who agree with me, but eventually, all the hate (sometimes irrational) gets old.
Anyway, I enjoy some good, deep discussion (I guess I miss all those history and literature classes in college) but they take some stuff WAY too seriously. Like Glee. I just recently started watching (I got a review copy of the DVD set and have been catching up) and enjoyed it. I went to TWoP and -- whoa. I wondered if we were all watching the same show. Besides, the level of love for some characters and hate for others (usually the ones I actually enjoyed or found most interesting) boggled my mind. Or Chuck. It's not Shakespeare. It's supposed to be a fun show. I enjoyed last night's episodes. I peek into TWoP and there's all this hate.
I respect others' opinions. I don't really care if someone hates a character I like. That's fine. But at least hate the character for legitimate reasons. Not invented ones. Or "just because."
I don't know if the site was always like this -- I've been around since the Mighty Big TV days -- but now, I pretty much just check in for shows' spoiler threads and media links, because those can actually be helpful.

I too was a poster since the MBTV days and I don't think the site is even close to how it used to be. As snotty as it sounds, I think the posters back then were a lot more intelligent and nowadays they seem to let anyone keep posting no matter how stupid they are. Say what you will about the Wing and Glark days, they gave the boot to those who deserved it most of the time. Now I don't see much difference between TWOP and IMDB and that is pretty sad.

After all this time I STILL don't know why they changed the name from MBTV. I think they alluded to someone having the same sort of name, but when I looked it up back then I didn't see any TV affiliation with that. Weird they were so secretive.

They changed their name to avoid a potential trademark infringement lawsuit. There was already a website called MBTV.com (now defunct) that dealt with television production (I think).

I remember the Mighty Big days too; I went over there because of the early days of Survivor. Other than the 20 pages of post-show commentary that I had to wade through the morning after the show aired, at least it was mostly witty and entertaining commentary. Now, I don't even bother.
Someone named HollywoodPoodle annoys me in the How To Reality threads, specifically House Hunters and Property Virgins. Also I think she's trying to be useful and informative, she comes across like a big ol' real estate know-it-all.
(And I always worry that a TWOP poster might be a Greecie under another name. My name there is different than it is here, since TWOP Mugsy got banned in the great J&K+8 kerfuffle.)

I'm a Greecie there under another name! But I barely ever post.
Is it wrong that I still harbor an extreme antipathy to the overbearing Miss Alli? Nowadays when I encounter "NPR's Linda Holmes" I can't help wishing she would wear out her welcome there, and disappear.

Also I think she's trying to be useful and informative, she comes across like a big ol' real estate know-it-all. Hollywood Poodle and Satchel Pooch really bug me in those threads. One of my biggest annonyances is they can't allow anyone to have an opinion without trying to inform them about how it "really" is with regards to real estate, and it turns into a 5 paragraph lecture about how big cities can have small neighborhoods that aren't noisy, the need for closets, the appeal of stainless steel, and my favorite, the necessity of thinking about the resale possiblilities of any house you plan to buy. Do you remember the poster named BlazeDog? I think that's Hollywood Poodle; the posts have that same tone. One person that I really like in that thread is Yellow October, which is weird, because I hate her everywhere else.

A couple pages ago the Jersey Shore thread turned into a law debate based on what if the Situation had had sex with the girl who later passed out drunk in the street. Her friends and the housemates were too busy brawling for things to get anywhere, so this was a purely hypothetical discussion.
Unlike the question of why do laywers and law students have so much free time in the middle of the work day to debate a hypothetical situation on Jersey Shore?

The Glee boards are the worst--filled with joyless posters with irrationally deep levels of hatred for Will and Finn. And they all love Brittany, who has had maybe ten lines throughout the entire series. My TWoP name is different than my Greecie name, but I don't post over there too often.

I saw that, too! I also wondered what the hell these people are doing with their time. However, in the interest of full disclosure, I am also an attorney who wastes an inordinate amount of time on these boards, but every minute I waste has to be billed by the end of the month, or I don't get paid. I guess I'm trying to say that (at least for me) we work, we screw around, but we don't get paid to screw around (unlike my 3 glorious weeks as a temp receptionist.) All of that being said, I don't talk legality online. Not only do the laws vary from state-to-state, but I think it makes people look like pompous jackasses when they start citing (and misinterpreting) statutes.
